Now that the date is settled, let's concentrate on who is coming and the FOOD, FOOD, FOOD!!!!
What: GoonFest 2011 aka DNY's Annual Turkey Fry and Dive Extravaganza
Spend the day or weekend diving and eating with a bunch of goons.
Date: Saturday, Nov 12 & Sunday, Nov 13;
Generally, Saturday has the most peeps so we fry two turkeys and one turkey on Sunday with lots of leftovers from Saturday.
Time: 8:00AM to 6:00PM of diving, SI fun and eating.
Where: Dutch Springs, PA
When: 8:00AM to whenever we get kicked out!!!
The more the merrier!!!! If you want to partake in the mayhem please bring something to share with the group. We don't want bad diving karma visited upon ya. Either PM me or post in this thread what you're bringing to share. Mods will update this post with attendees and what they're bringing.
Attendees: Spouses, GF/BF, SO, kids are invited. I can add them to attendees list if you let me know they're joining us.
dbuggy-Turkey fryer, BBQ ribs or pulled pork & fryer oil
Nautica Tim - Stacey's hobo beans
Stacey (Mrs. Nautica Tim) - Stacey's hobo beans
GypsyJim - Chili
ScubaSam - Homemade cranberry sauce, Two turkeys but I ain't frying 'em.
Parzdiver - Spicy Thermonuclear Shrimp
wrybosome
drydiver - plates, utensils, paper towels, tin foil, some other useful crap and stove, kettles and hot chocolate
BigHarryDiver - Something dessert'ish.
Islandnj - Tres Leche Cake (or two?)
BettyRubble - Cornbread, weaponry?
DM95 - Dessert
Chief Dave L - Water, Pepsi and Green tea
KozMcCharlie - Some good salad
Tanked - He'll figure it out by tomorrow
What to bring: List is just a *suggested* food list based on last year's list. If you want to bring something not on the list, I'll add it to the list. If no one volunteers to bring it, I'll remove it from the list. Given it's a Turkey Fry, that is the only item that is non-negotiable. :D
Turkeys: We fried three for the entire weekend last year.
I'll bring two turkeys so if someone can volunteer to bring one more turkey that would be great. The turkey must be prep the night before ie:cleaned, dried and seasoned. 15 lbs max for the turkey because the fryer fits a 15lb bird. It takes 45 mins to 1 hour to fry a 15lb bird.
Oven mitts, spatulas, tongs, carving knife:
Sterno, chafing dishes, grill:
Stuffing:

Beverages:

Salad: Vegetable or fruit
Side Dishes: Cole slaw, potato salad

I am in (assuming work doesn't interfere at the last minute)
I'll bring cornbread, 1 container of oil (see note below).
Sammie - I think you need to designate what type of oil you want for the fryer -- specifically peanut or whatever. I don't think it is safe to 'mix' oils as they have various smoke points etc. (can ya tell I speak from experience!)
Also, as I recall we needed like 7 gallons the first year. I wasn't there the 2nd year. If someone can confirm how many gallons it took to fry 3 birds, then let's note that in the listing as well. I'll agree to bring 1 gallon of whatever type of oil we designate.

I read some sites online and quoted below is from one of the sites. What about cottonseed oil for frying the turkey?
"Since the price of peanut oil went through the roof this year and folks still want to fry their birds, I started looking around for a cheaper alternative.
I found it in cottonseed oil. It has a similar smoke point, right at 450 degrees, and looks for all purposes just like peanut oil.
More importantly, it's markedly cheaper than peanut oil. "

I would advise against this unless something has changed recently with the growing and processing of cottonseed oil
To make cottonseed oil a serious toxin (gossypol )is removed, otherwise cottonseed oil is actually so toxic it is used as a pesticide. Also cotton crops are under less chemical regulation and many pesticides or chemicals can be used on cotton crops that are illegal for use on food crops.
In addition, Dr. Weil's site notes some concerns in response to whether cottonseed oil is safe:
"
Definitely not. As a matter of fact, in my book, Eight Weeks to Optimum Health, one of the first things I ask readers to do is to go through their pantry shelves and throw out anything made with cottonseed oil. I regard it as unhealthy because it is too high in saturated fat and too low in monounsaturated fat. What's more, cottonseed oil may contain natural toxins and probably has unacceptably high levels of pesticide residues (cotton is not classified as a food crop, and farmers use many agrichemicals when growing it). Be on the lookout for cottonseed oil in packaged foods and avoid products that contain it. Manufacturers like it because it's cheap, and products that say "may contain one or more of these oils" and list cottonseed, will almost certainly contain it."
Instead I recommend peanut oil, corn oil, and canola oil which are all often used for deep-frying because they have high smoke points. Peanut is usually the more expensive one so we may want to go with canola or corn.

Lisa - No schedule as we eat constantly. Some dive, some fry turkey, some cook and all eat. Dutch opens at 8AM and we must be out by 6PM.
Last year, we all went to Gregory's after the Turkey Fry (to eat, again) and then we stopped into the Pig Pen. It pretty much depends on who wants to hang or how tired everyone is feeling after a day of diving and eating.
In other words, no schedule, just whatever y'all wanna do and if you can find [-]victims [/-] goons to join in . :D

That means the thermo nuclear shrimp will be there on Sat? :D Mo better! ;)
I am planning on being there Sat with chilli.
I have not decided on diving tho. Have not been wet since early Aug, and I have yet to even try the doubles set up, so I may just bring them and simply play around and make adjustments while I have a few more doubles experienced DNY goons around to advise me. That way, even if I don't get in the water I will profit from the chance to learn and adjust.
Colleen still is not sure if she will make it, and with my continuing rental bs stuff hanging over my head I may end up backing out last minute, although I have no intention of letting that happen, short of an emergency.

Made the chili last night, and now it sits 'aging' in the frig, which allows all the flavors to soak in well. The entire house smells of spices, onions, garlic and roasted meats.
Now I need to find a way to padlock the chili pot so it doesn't all disappear before Sat morning!

Plans for this afternoon after class ... baking. Gonna be bringing brownies (cake is too much hassle as we have no fridge space for the overnight storage/rest period at the moment). I have a problem.
It turns out the Lehigh Georgetown football game being played tomorrow is the Patriot League championship game. Would have never thought Georgetown would be in the contention. Game is from 12:30 to around 4.
My current thought is this.... Get to Dutch Springs early. Hang out. Eat some food. Cook some shrimp. Get over to the game. Watch Lehigh beat Georgetown. Go back to Dutch. I'm thinking it just might work. Except I don't think I can squeeze in a dive.... argh....

Hey all... Just wounding if there's room for one more? I just got back from a couple months on the road and have been dying to get wet (and cold... Is it even warm enough to consider diving wet? Eh... Probably fine for a couple dives... Certainly better than a tour bus.)

Not sure how much diving I will do, myself, but loaded up the new doubles, the dry suit and accessories. At least I intend to pick some DNY brains and double check my set up with some experienced eyes helping.
I was sitting here @ a 1/2hr ago, when suddeny it hit me that I had not actually seen my wetsuit hood I wear with the drysuit when I was loading up. Glad I checked. My son had borrowed it when we were in the 1000 ilse in Aug and it was not in my drysuit bag. THAT would have sure made diving fun, not.

A "regular size" AB is Pint+1. My budget would not fit as many AB's as your cooler would hold anyway. Even if DS allowed such liquid nourishments on their grounds. :dontknow:

I had a great weekend with the DNYers and we lucked out with sunny weather. It was a delicious Turkey Fry and am still full.
This Hobbit in Training was very happy stuffing my face with...
Rich's pulled BBQ pork and homemade Funnel Cake with loads of powdered sugar
Jim's Venison Chili
Stacey's rockin' baked beans, noodle salad, hot chocolate
Mikes semi-thermo shrimps. I loved the Herr's Cheddar Horseradish chips
Jared's homemade brownies
Delicious Apple pie and pumpkin pies courtesy of Harry
Tons of water, Pepsi, Green Tea Ginger Ale courtesy of Dave
Veggie platter with dip, chips, salsa
Fresh fruit salad courtesy of Karen and Kris
Turkey, loving fried/handled by Mike, Stacey, Tim, Pammie....who am I forgetting???
If I left out any food or beverage, please forgive as I am still in a food coma and digestive energy is sapping brain power.
Sweetest surprise was Sean, what a little heartbreaker with those big blue eyes, long curly lashes and gravity challenged cheeks. Thanks for bringing him, Tim. It was wonderful to finally meet you.
Big hugs and thanks for everyone who showed up to join us. I had a most memorable weekend!
