I’ve had the unhappy task of clearing my parents’ house out for rental. Mom is in assisted living and has no room for most of the stuff they’ve collected during 57 years of marriage. So we’ve been sorting and clearing. Anyway I’ve been going thru pictures and found one of me “diving” on the floor of the living room. Thought I’d share. Diving wasn’t something I just thought I’d start doing I was born to do it, here’s proof.

Now there is a soon-to-be lost art. I wonder how many people even know what you are talking about.

I found 2 more old pics, these are real. Either Lake George NY or Lake Winnipesaukee NH. I have my 1st SPG in this one that orange circle under my left arm. I'm also wearing my UDT vest w/ single CO2 inflator. Why the snorkel? Just didn't take it off. The ice was almost 3 feet thick! The UNI-suit was new and new to me, what a great why to control bouyancy I found! I tried to use it year round but it was just too warm in the summer. AHHH the old days.

Those are nice gloves, very warm. Do they make them these days with the new materials? I use 5 finger gloves now, Henderson hyper-strech. I found out long ago with the dry suit I really didn't need the 3 finger mitts. That may have been the 2nd or 3th time I used that suit. I was still shaking things out.

These are nylon lined but not new - my friend gave them to me and I was going to buy some five fingers for my WS but they work so well I never got around to it. For my DS I have dry gloves. My hands are toasty down to 39F.
I think they still sell those unisuits.

AfterDark,
First, let me say that I'm sorry to hear about your Mom in assisted living. That's tough, and my thoughts are with you on this aspect.
But going through and finding those photos is pretty nice too. I liked the photo of you on the carpet with the "speargun." My parents went through that with me, but I was in the front yard with a yellow 38 cubic foot tank and my Healthways Scuba regulator, just breathing out of it (that was amazing to me as a kid).
I also used the 3-finger mitts, but some of those we made ourselves out of 1/8 inch neoprene. We simple outlined our hand, gave about 1/2 inch to enclose the finger and thumb, and cut it out. Then we did a second one, flipped over, and glued them together. That was an easy way to make the 3-finger mitts.

Thanks John, Mom is doing well, she just doesn't have the mobility to live alone. They have thousands of pictures and 8mm moives, it'll take many hours to go thru them all. There was an 8mm movie made of my dive in the living room! If I ever get it on a media I can post I will. We used to repiar our suits but never tried to make gloves or suits for that matter. The harness I'm wearing in the ice diving pic I made from seatbelts, brass book screws and SS rings. Those were good days.

I have often heard/read references to seatbelts being used for harnesses and even saw an old hawaiian pack at a flea market with one as a waist belt.

Your photo brought back some great memories. When I was 7, my father made me my "first" scuba from some coffee cans. Somewhere I have some 8mm movies of me swimming in the back yard. Now I want to find an old projector and check them out. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.

If I remember my knots correctly, that is a double. A single is a sheet bend when two lines are used or a knot tied on the end of a single line.

I had one of Duckbill's Mai Tai's at the last North Coast Party.
All I can say is it was AWESOME! Best I ever had hands down.
I let another diver at the party try it (Pablo Blanco) and he ran off with it, wouldn't give it back!

Thanks guys. I'm glad the Mai Tais were a hit. We have Vic Bergeron to thank for those. A full blown SB bash at my house sounds expensive. Might have to be BYOB and I'll do the mixin':D.
Hey you're tying up the thread! :rofl3:
I'm surprised you haven't come on saying, "Hey, you're Tai-ing up Mai thread!":D All that talk about single vs. double carricks reminded me about my VSS shirt, this being the vintage forum and all, and I incorporated the double carrick bend into it as well. Did anyone notice that?
Back to the op though, I'm hoping you can somehow get your old film transferred to digital and on YouTube, AfterDark. That would be cool to see.
