Power Scuba began a week-long Safety Stand Down last Friday. To kick the Stand Down off we participated in a Rescue Scenario onboard the dive charter boat, Marissa (big thanks to them). The San Diego lifeguards got into the act too and added that much more realism to our exercise. All the Power Scuba members who attended felt there was great value in our running of the scenario (unconscious, non-breathing diver on the surface) and it drove home some important points to us all: 1)Accidents will happen when you least expect them, 2)Divers onboard must be prepared to act or pitch in (not just rely on a two-person boat crew), 3)All divers should seek training at least up through Rescue certification, and 4)All divers must take personal responsibility for their own safety.

Power Scuba is greatly concerned about the number of San Diego/SoCal dive accidents that've occured in the last 24 months or more. We intend to bring home the need for safe, responsible conduct in this fun sport we all love. Look to our group (www.powerscuba.org) for events and stories having to do with safety.

Cheers,

Bill Powers
