I'm heading out for the shore dive Saturday. Have we decided on a location yet? What exit, what 711 or IHOP that isn't an IHOP are we meeting at.
I was thinking of doing Dutch Sunday too.

We could be up for Beach 9 on Saturday morning. This way Ben can come, and it will cut over an hour off of Chris' drive time.
Ben- Is the paid lot still open? How close is the table you gave me to the correct tide there? What time do you think we should meet in the lot?
TTSkipper
November 6th, 2003, 08:55 AM
The lot was open this past weekend and it opens at 7:00 or so each morning. As far as the tides being accurate, I am going by what my LDS said to use for the location and they do alot of their classes there and are very friendly with the owners. I will try and give my Almost Paradise a call today to see if they will be open or I will call my LDS.

for the tides at almost paradise you take the east rockaway inlet tide chart and add 7 minutes.

Izzy- get your gear ready, and get to beach 9 or DS this weekend.
Martin- Thanks, that makes Saturday mornings slack tide 7:07. Ben - I've only been boat diving out of Rockaway. How strong is the tide at B9? Can we get in 40 minutes (20 before and 20 after slack)???
If so, we need to get there early enough to be in the water at 6:45
For anyone not doing DS on Sunday, we're probably doing the 10:47AM north shore dive also.

On sunday last week I got in the water right at slack and dove for over 50 minutes. The current in the channel gets really strong, but alot of the interesting life in closer to shore between 2 breakwaters which really lessen the current to almost nothing. I am pretty sure of my times on this but I will check when I get home tonight and can look at my log book.

Here's a suggestion for our site. How about a page that explains dive tables and how to determine what time to dive at a particular site. I'm clueless when it comes to that stuff, other than "Hey G meet us here at this time." If I were to to try to plan a shore dive myself, we'd be doing a surface interval up in Canada!

ScottyK I lied again :D it looks like my original estimates on the times for my dive last week were wrong. The computer never lies.
Based on the tide table and what DocMartin said last sunday low tide was at 8:31am, I was in the water at 8:15am and did a dive for about 55 minutes. The end of my dive was definately closer to the beach within the breakwalls and out of the current if it was strong at that point.
From what I know you have about 30 minutes on either side of the slack that you can be out in the channel. That being the case we could try and get in the water about 7:10 or so and still be able to do 30 minutes out in deeper water in the channel and then come in closer to shore for the last half of the dive. I will double check this with some people from my dive shop who dive there more often tomorrow when I pick up a tank.
The gate to Beach 9th opens at about 7:00, we can actually park on the street before that and start to unload our gear and then once they open the gate we can move our vehicles into the lot.
Anyone interested in going on Saturday morning PM me and I will give you my cell phone number so that we can contact each other if there are any issues.

The state of Almost Paradise which is the operation that runs at Beach 9th is in limbo because the property has apparently been sold. I spoke to LDS and they said that we can just go there but there will probably not be any hot water. If the owner does not open the gate to the parking lot, we can still park the next street over which has on street parking with no meters and enter via the pedestrian gate on that street. I will take a ride by there tonight and make sure that everything looks okay, then I will put up another post just confirming that we should be fine. Last week at night we parked on the next street and entered through the ped gate and had no issues. As far as cost , I think that I paid $15 when I was there on Sunday.

Beach 9th is in the LI Shore Diver book, but I am not sure how good the directions are. If you know how to get to JFK Airport, then getting to Beach 9th is very easy. You can find directions and the address from the Almost Paradise website here (http://www.scubaparadise.com/howtoget2.htm) . If anyone is concerned about getting there, just PM me and I will give you my cell phone so that you can give me a call on your way there.

Hey Guys- Sorry we didn't make it out this morning. We just got a new foster dog who'd been badly beaten and starved. He woke us up at 5AM having some kind of seizure. We rushed out to the 24 hour vet, and I didn't think to grab my cell phone.
Hope you both had a great dive!

Not bad. Vis wasn't great, cleared up a little once you got down to the bottom and current was pretty strong, especially towards the end of the dive.
Not the greatest conditions for me to try out my new toys in! But...saw tons of huge spider crabs and we saw a flounder pretty close to shore, and all in all still much more life than the quarry!
How's the puppy?
Are you sure you just didn't want to hear me yelling "1851" all day?
Martin an dutchfin - I'll be on the peninsula side, where we parked last time (back of the top lot). I'm going to set up camp right out of my car (red explorer sport, blue canopy). It's a little bit of a walk to the water that way, but better than having to haul everything up the hill at the end of the day.
I should be there around 12:00. Please let me know if you guys are going to be somewhere else or can't make it. You guys are my buddies, so if you don't go, I'd be making my 2nd weekly Dutch Sprins trip for an air fill!

The pup is OK. His problems stem from being so malnourished. I just need to keep cramming him full of dog chow for awhile.
Hope you all have fun at DS tomorrow. We'll be hitting the water somewhere out east.

had a great dive day at dutch. did two dives with dutchfin. grunzster joined us for the second dive. air temp was chilly but water was apparently still tolerable (low 50s) as grunzster dove wet and could still move and feel all his limbs by the end of the dive. dutchfin was a fantastic guide. he knows every nook at dutch and gets you right back to your point of entry. he must have a gps chip implanted in his brain. thanks for the great tour!

I think I may have been the only one there crazy enough to dive wet. Felt fine at depth, I maxed out at about 70, but if anyone saw my frozen a** shaking as I changed behind my truck!
Great dive! Finally got to see the pump house. Thanks! And as far as the dutchfin's navigation skills, the first thing I saw when I poked my head back up, was my water bottle still sitting on the dock waiting for me!
Looking at the map now, we did cover a pretty big area. I think I need to get a pair of jets for the next one though! Or a scooter!

I’m glad to see you all got in some good diving.
Sorry I couldn’t make any, I was tied up at the home front.
I did get wet though; I’m teaching my 1 year old to swim.
She’s blowing bubbles; it’s a start.
The more diving buddies the better.
I also got to cut and quarter about 1/8 of a cord of firewood.
It’s not getting any warmer.
