No date on Atom 3.0 main time display

What is the reason for only showing the alternate time on the main time display or nothing at all, and putting the date on the alternate screen? I'm trying to figure out when you'd want to see both times at the same time, especially instead of showing the date. Seems counterintuitive to me.
