Just got back from a night dive at Shaw's Cove, and for the second time we heard a number of disturbing explosive sounds under water. Anyone know what these are?

That would fit in with the kind of sounds we heard. They're pretty scary under water. Do you know if it's legal?

My guess as well

From 2009...

Seal bombs are illegal to have, unless you have a lightboat or squid seine permit. They are regulated by the fish and game and distrubuted to the commerical fleet through the market they fish for.

I have heard that the squid are here also.....Do seal bombs kill seals or make them deaf or......

It's quite scary when you're at 80 fsw in Redondo Canyon at night and suddenly "BAM" a seal bomb goes off, you can't tell where it's coming from, or when the next one will come. There was a story in a local SD newspaper a few years back that said they believe that rather than scaring them away, the sea lions have learned that when they hear the pop, it means the squid are around.

Just found this you tube video.....
