Am I the only person who thinks it is a terrible idea for people to be penetrating a wreck without the proper training and equipment? I'm not judging anyone, just curious how many people think this is a bad idea, and how many think it's fine.

Matthew,

The C-53 was prepared for penetration prior to sinking. There are windows cut into the sides so that no matter where you are in the wreck an exit is readily available.

I've been to Truk and penetration is definitely not for the untrained on many of the wrecks in the lagoon. The C-53 is very different.

Just my dos centavos.

No pics, but video I put together from our stay at SCC in Feb. 09. C-53 starts about a minute in.

wreck penetration - the C-53 in Cozumel.... I thought it would be a problem for some people also but really it is not. All boat diving in Cozumel is lead by a DM. The DM knows the wreck inside out and every dive shop uses the same path through the wreck. The day we went with SCC, we were divided into 2 groups of 4 divers per DM. There is no reason that it would be unsafe in such a small group. Other dive shops might do it with more divers, but since it was prepped for divers with lots of exit points, I still think it is a safe wreck for even beginners.

You mean diving an overhead environment like the Throat without a cave class or something. :) I dove the wreck early in my diving time and was kinda surprised by the size of the holes in the hull. It was really like a swim through for us.

It's an overhead in my book clean or not and has to be treated as one.

Beautiful pics. I heard that the wreck is on the east side and can be a difficult dive depending on the conditions. Im going in April and want to dive it. Anyone see this as an advanced dive? We both have very good buoyancy control and gas management.

The C53 is on the west side in front of Chankanaab. It is a PIA if the current is strong. Not technical or advanced in my simple mind, just was some hard swimming when I was there.

Sitting in the head. Toilets have taken a beating since they 1st sunk it, most are pretty smashed from tanks. Sorry for the silt, it's a little tight in there with a few large people and their gear. Left to right-TVMark, Dennis and me giving the other salute http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/images/smilies/Standard%20Smiles/04.gifhttp://www.scubaboard.com/forums/images/smilies/More%20Smiles/mooner.gifhttp://www.scubaboard.com/forums/images/smilies/More%20Smiles/eyebrow.gif:

If I didn't have my flashlight on I never would have found this on the outside, as there is no red color at 100'. It really lit up with the strobes though. One of my favorite pictures I've ever taken uw:

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7636/p1010157gv.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/3/p1010157gv.jpg/)

I like the dive. I'd rather not go inside to far though. There is alot of life on the outside and I'm perfectly happy cruising around outside looking at the stuff that has grown on the ship. These are from 2009. It's amazing to me how much life there is on this thing in the relatively short time it has been down there. There is lots of stuff growing down by the propellers but I seem to have misplaced those pics from that dive...

Yes, the next overhead dive may not be as forgiving.

As others have said, the C-53 is on the west side of the island, where the boats dive 99.9% of the time. It is sitting between two reef areas, out in a sandy spot. For that reason current can be an issue. We have done the wreck twice. The first time zero current, the second time current on the way down but by the end of dive it had died off completely.
It isn't the easiest dive for beginners but it is manageable as long as your DM knows it is your first wreck dive and gives you a good briefing. And if at any time you don't want to be inside the wreck, you can exit and wait for your group on the deck area. There is alot of growth on the wreck, and lots of fish to watch. I know that some people want to dive the wreck, but not go inside. They just tell their DM their dive plan and stay with their buddy. No problemo.

We have not dove the C-53... will I be banned if I post a few shots of her (identical)-twin sisters, the C-55 and C-58?

Same ships, same depth, same general dive conditions.

Here's a good link: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/underwater-treasures/340785-cancun-mayan-riviera-wrecks.html

I believe both the C-55 & C-58 are off of Cancun, fairly close to each other.

Nice photos. Thanks.

It's a nice dive and does well for a change of pace. But it's nothing I would want to dive again.

If Cozumel really wanted to take some pressure of the reefs, they should sink a much larger wreck along the lines of what they have been sinking in the keys the past ten years. Many are big enough to dive mutliple times and never see the same area twice.

I have to admit, I really get bored diving this wreck, but after seeing your photos I think I'd like to go back and try some more.

NICE PICS, you guys!
