Northern Wake: (A 24 minute documentary based in Alaska)

The filmmakers behind the short film In The Wake Of Giants are raising money for a sequel. For those of you who haven't seen it, this was a film that started at the Blue Ocean Film Festival and then got picked up by PBS as an episode of Natural Heroes.

The first film focused on the issue of humpback whale entanglement in Hawaii; whales get caught in fishing gear, etc, and the drag from the ropes and buoys kills or maims them. There's a small group of volunteers that work with NOAA who go out in ten-foot rubber dinghys, throw grappling hooks into the line, pull themselves up behind a pissed-off whale, and use a pole knife to cut the ropes. A lot of the footage came from GoPro cameras on the researchers' helmets.

Looks like the sequel will be shot in Alaska; apparently that's where a lot of the whales get snagged in the first place. They're asking for donations on Kickstarter, which is a crowd-funding site for independent projects.
