Which is the best Hawaian sling/pole spear for travel?

Is a handle or grip important?

A sling is probably tough for travel because you need a shaft that is over 5 feet long.

There are many pole spears which break down into manageable length sections that are great for travel. Pole spears can vary in price from maybe $30 to over $300.. so what is best depends on budget and what you are trying to spear.

We are headed to the Abacos. Just looking to spear fish for food, not going for any records.

The law requires a sling and No SCUBA.

Just to amplify, a Hawaiian sling

...are very different things. Bringing a Hawaiian sling to someplace that only allows pole spears can get you in trouble.

All the best, James

The Bahamas regulation is:Spearfishing
Hawaiian sling is the only approved spearfishing device. You are not allowed to use scuba gear or an air compressor to harvest fish, conch, crawfish or other marine animals. Spearfishing is not allowed within one mile of the coast of New Providence, within one mile of the south coast of Freeport, Grand Bahama and within 200 yards of the coast of all The Out Islands. Spearing or taking marine animals by any means is prohibited within national sea parks.

Which do you think is better a Hawaian sling or pole spear?

You can use a pole spear or a sling in theBahamas. If you are looking to spear small to moderately sized fish, amuti-prong pole spear may be your best choice. You can expect to see manylionfish which are very good to eat. They’re easier to kill and to handle ifthey have been shot in the head and are immobilized by the multiple times of apole spear... Also, much more likely to hit a kill spot with multiple barbscompared to the one spot from a sling.

We offer an excellent pole spear that breaks down for travel. This spear willwork very well for small fish, up to about 10 lbs. Our spear is easy to aim and shooting it isintuitive. No special grip is required, but for warm water pole spearing, we also recommend these particular glovesbecause they provide excellent grip.

Many people do not want to fly with a Hawaiianspear shaft that are normally 5.5 feet or longer.

Holy flashback Batman. Where'd you get the sling/shaft pic.
In the Bahamas pole spears and Hawaiin slings are the same when harvesting.

Definitely liking that Mako travel spear... But ~$15 shipping to Florida seems to kill the deal. :(
