In the interest of not totally derailing another thread, I have broken away with this question:

I have heard that the hundredth dive is traditionally done naked, but really, has anyone here really done that?

Don't people get arrested for things like that? With photographic evidence forever following them on a google search?

#s 100, 200 and next month 300 have all/will be done here in Nova Scotia. Naked not an option, though I probably wouldn't get arrested at some sites due to lack of population.

Nobody would've dived with me if I'd done that ... trust me on that one. Besides, in Puget Sound, it'd have been an extremely short dive.

My advice would be go do your dive in the usual manner, then celebrate afterward with your friends ... it's an accomplishment, after all ...

If you Google Image Search that, and turn off safe search, as a hetero-male you will be severely disappointed.

I say "urban legend", and would add that it only concerns warm ocean diving. TMHeimer (http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/members/tmheimer.html) are you then there yet?

Plus, how can I not post when someone uses my name as a verb?

This thread reminds me of the first time i saw someone, someone i didn't know, diving in their birthday suit. It was in Coz. Some dude from another group made it a point to swim by us displaying his junk. Not swimming in a normal face down attitude but rather swimming on his side with his package facing our group. Cracked me up to no end.

Takes all types to make this world go round i guess so knock yourself out if thats how you roll.

Never heard of the 100th dive being traditional. No one should wait til their 100th. Go for it. As for you guys up north, I guess you're not as tough as you think.

Sure, some of us are tough, but we're not stupid. I'm not going to do an hour-long dive without a drysuit/wetsuit in six degree Celsius (43 degree Fahrenheit) water, unless I want hypothermia. I might not even last 10 minutes at that temperature.

Then again, I'm not one of the tough ones; I wouldn't even dive in a wetsuit here. Maybe if I were in Florida.

I was told that the 100th dive had to be done naked. Alot of instructors try to keep this alive. Did I do it no. I just seen a post this year of some newly cert. DM's doing the 100th dive naked in the Philippines with Threasher Shark Divers so it's something that is done.

I became aware of this tradition early on in my dive career. I was on a liveaboard in the GBR and there was a British crewmember on the boat celebrating his 100th. Looking back in my logbook, dive #31 (a night dive) simply says, "I saw a naked Englishman."

My 100th was in Maine. There was no way in hell.

I (and two buddies) did my #201 naked in Curacao, although I was repeatedly informed that using the crotch strap on my BP/W was "cheating." I think it was more out of whimsy than ritual, though. Certainly underscores the need for good spatial awareness buoyancy control when the lionfish are out and about in the dark.

My 100th dive was part of my drysuit course...for one it would have defeated the purpose and two, it was in 39F water. I did one of those commemorative dives on my last trip in Bonaire. Was diving as part of a group (friends) and had a hard time keeping my GF beside me as she always had the tendancy to drift back and then take pictures with the camera. Good incentive to keep your distance not only from marine life but also corals and sponges. Asha I know what you mean about the crotch strap. Another advantage of the Backplate over a traditional BCD however, it does very little for the torso area...:D

There are some dive groups that do every dive of their week-long liveaboard sans suits of any kind (nope, we weren't aboard). Some of the dive guides adopt the same uniform. Yes, this is in warm Caribbean water.

I have heard of this diving naked on the 100th dive, usually by people that I probably don't want to see naked. haha!

There is photographic evidence of the maneuver who's name shall not be spoken....maybe that was some sort of 100th dive thing.

Lol. I went and typed in "100th dive" into google images BEFORE reading your post. The first image in the list it gave me was.. well i'm not sure if the other diver having their tank adjusted is male or female. I'm hoping the latter.

My 100th was on the 10 month anniversary of my OW certification and it was on the P-38 wreck off Torrey Pines in San Diego (http://www.cawreckdivers.org/Wrecks/P38.htm). It was part of my Deep Diver certification and my log shows max depth 123' and 50f temp. 12 minutes on the bottom. Not naked.

I did see someone do their 100th naked last year on a liveaboard in the Similans. He wore a neoprene sock, so not 100% naked at the start, but after the sock fell off he was in compliance with the tradition.

I've heard of it but never seen it. We tease our divers approaching their 100th with this "tradition" but we don't actually encourage them to follow through, and none of my divers ever has. Keep in mind, though, that I live and work on an island where it's considered uncouth to walk down the street in just swimwear or to go without a shirt any time you're not in the water (even when riding a motorbike) and where local women (other than sex workers) select swimwear that covers their bodies halfway to the knees (sometimes with little lycra skirts over lycra shorts), so maybe this "tradition" is really "not suited" (haha) to this place. I guess it might take place here on low-budget boats that cater to the backpacker clientele who are really not much attuned to local mores and care primarily about their own good time.

Yep- it's been done but it isn't done on a regular basis. There are a few celebrations like u/w champagne, fish chum in the BCD pockets, the WarHammer maneuver, as well as a naked dive to celebrate achievements or haze the new recruits, or just plain disgust people.

So, what to do with a stark narked diver? Put him in a hospital gown real quick, and bring him up 30 feet?

I will tease certain (liberal) students/buddies/divers about it. I have had only one in all the years that has actually bared it all and that was last year on Roatan. I have been informed by another that his 100th will happen while we are in Cozumel in a few weeks. Since he was witness to the previous encounter and will not be out [-]done[/-] performed by a female, I'm sure it will happen.
That will be one dive I will not be keeping a close eye on the entire group. :shocked2:

My 100th dive was a cave dive with my cave instructor and his late wife. I am not sure how well that would have went over. Imagine if something happened and you were a body recovery. I just could not do that to someone.

Now I am coming up on two new 100's. My 100th dive here in Cuba will be this weekend. My 100th SM dive will be next month it looks like. I really don't want to do it this weekend, as I am doing video for SUDS. Those guys have been through enough already, they don't need to deal with that. Now my SM dive.. HMMMM.

Reminds me of the following joke: a younger monk is going through tthe underground hallways of the monastery in search of the old and wise monk. At one point he hears crying. He approached the area only to find the older monk in tears in front of old opened scripts. When asked about what seems to be the problem the old monk answered ''Something got lost in translation a long time ago...the word contained in the script is celebrate and not celibate''

What most folks don't understand and realize is that Naked Dive 100 is just 1/10th of the required training dives working up to Nekkid Dive 1,000

As my Texas GF once said, naked is when you aren't wearing any clothes... Nekkid is where you're "up to something"

Pretty sure that's the same one who explained to me that she loved the effect of buoyancy on her breasts. "Better than surgery," she explained. Oh, best not to be on her boat on your birthday.

Where I come from it was tradition to jump off of the top deck of the dive boat in your birthday suit. In 40-50F water it would be a very short dive. The question is would there be any air left in the cylinder even after a 5 minute dive?

Decided against making my 100th dive a naked dive as it was also a night dive... and really... it's only a tradition/encouraged amongst young warm water divers and gap year divers.

Grateful that I decided to keep my clothes on, as my buddy (not her 100th dive) was stung by an unidentified jellyfish on our ascent to the safety stop. Thought she was stung again at around 3-5m so we skipped the stop and came straight up. A few mins back on the boat and she went in to shock.

Had I been naked and also been stung during the ascent, it could have ended a lot worse. We were the last pair to surface as it was.
