View Full Version : Cancun Hotel Zone to Playa (for Coz) - not the usual Cancun to playa thread :)

Will be making my annual summer trip to Coz with the family (4 of us) but will be starting in Cancun for two days to swim with the whale sharks. Will need to get from Hotel Zone in CUN to Playa for the ferry. It would seem that the easiest and cheapest way would be to hire a cab directly from the Hotel in Cancun and request a trip to Playa but I am wondering if there might be some taxi law that does not allow that or if there are certain logistics that I am not aware of. Has anyone ever done this and is it as easy as it sounds?
CUN/COZ July 28 - August 4 Casa Mexicana - BlueXT Sea - 6 weeks and counting

You certainly can take a taxi but the cost may be higher than using a private service like usa-transfers.com
Get a quote from any of the oft mentioned transportation services....then from a taxi VAN (preferable) and make your decision.

I'd take a taxi from the hotel zone to the ADO bus station, take the bus to Playa, then walk the three blocks to the ferry.
Bus from Cancun to Playa is 45 Pesos in the early morning.

I have done what mediumone did on one occasion. Oddly enough the bus fare from Cancun to Playa is less than the cost of airport to Playa and the bus runs more frequently. If travelling with 2 kiddies however (and if you have strollers, car seats, dive equipment and all that sort of paraphernalia) it might be a PITA. While I like saving money on certain things at certain times, I'm afraid the circumstances you are describing would try my patience and put me in a crabby mood for the rest of the day! ;)

Marg, you pretty much nailed it on the head. Any walking would probably involving me carrying all 6-8 bags and so for my sanity and back health I will go the most direct way. It seems that an organized van is the most effective way to go and I will likely arrange closer to the time. Interesting USA-transfers.com seems to be a dead link but google did give me other suggestions

I've done a very similar trip in reverse - taken a van service from near the ferry pier in Playa del Carmen to the Zona Hotelera in Cancun to meet up with people who were going to take us to whale sharks.
I no longer recall which service we used (might have been Entertainment Plus), but it was fairly painless to arrange, went smoothly, and didn't cost a mint. We had enough people that the per-person cost was reasonable and since we went directly from the parking lot near the ferry to our meeting point in Cancun it was the fastest and most direct option.
USA Transfers (http://www.usa-transfers.com/) loads just fine for me. As has been noted, there's hardly a dearth of options available.

A few years ago I took a taxi frim Playa to Isla Mujeres ferry dock. My wifey was feeling a little ill, and we didn't need the bus experience. We set the price with the taxi driver before we left, about $50.00 plus tip. Not such a big deal. Just get the price set before you go.

We've used USA Transfers a number of times and always been satisfied. Email communication is always fast, they figure out when, where and how and we just show up. They even contact us the day before we leave to 'remind' us of pick up time. They've got it down to a science! The vans are always neat and clean and the drivers safe and fun :)

Whenever we fly into Cancun on our way to Puerto Aventuras, we have used Cancun Valet (http://www.cancunvalet.com/). Very punctual, high quality vehicles, very personable drivers. You might check them out, at least to get a rate comparison to other services.
