I am looking to organize a trip to the Straits of Mackinaw for a group of SB friends in 2013. This is very early to be looking into things but since I have no real experience up there, and I like to plan (gives me something dive related to look forward to), I figured I would come to those that do have the experience.

I am thinking of doing to trip in early August to take advantage of the warmer weather. Water temps are not really a consideration for us. Is there any reason for avoiding that time of year? What about recommendations on charters? The # of divers is up in the air but it is starting with 6 of us and will grow from there. Obviously we would want a safe, comfortable boat but we are divers and are not looking for anything fancy. The trip would likely be 2 days of driving and 3 days of diving (i.e. long weekend sort of thing).

From there I think I can piece together a plan but will no doubt have additional questions along the way. Thank you for any input you might have.

The best boats bar none to dive the straits are one of these. They both trailer their boats up there from WI several times a year.

Shipwreck Explorers
Shipwreck Adventures

Anytime from mid-June through to end of August would be the best time IMO.

In terms of fills, this is the place we used.

http://www.idivemi.com - They're in Cheboygan about 20 min south of Mackinaw City.

Lodging, we loved this place:

He's also got two fins on the bottom of the Straits. Maybe you can find them for him.

I sacrificed a fin to the Georgian Bay scuba gods this summer so I cannot judge :D......thankfully mine was retrievable by a buddy though.

Swim a lot in circles do we? :D
