Since LD started to open this little "Can O' Worms" I thought I would get out the Milwaukee Industrial Can Opener and start a new thread on this.

Since this Board started we have come up with some
"interesting" acronyms for various items and events. A prime example is:

WHM- Warhammer Manuver

Let's start a list and make them official!

You forgot you own 'new' one:

studs - stock tank underwater discovery society

and then there is...

CAD - Candy Ass Diver
... just a start of the exsisting ones, I'm putting my thinking cap for new ones.

Bash,

Take my word for it, that is not a question you want to ask. It makes everyone cringe.

Let me give you the straight POOP before somebody comes in here and CLOUDS the issue and spills all the BEANS.

Last year during a trip to Barbados (I think) one of our illustrious Moderators (Warhammer) was diving with some of the other Board Members. Scubababy and Syruss32 I think.

They had the usual morning breakfast of fruit and toast, but for some reason Warhammer thinks he has a cast iron stomach and just had to have some of those refried black beans & salsa they always serve.

Anyway after breakfast off they go to the boat. During the trip out to the dive site, Warhammer starts complaining of an upset stomach. Syruss32 asks him if he is going to stay on the boat, Warhammer says, "and waste all that good money I paid for this trip, no way Jose." Down into the water they went, Scubababy was taking pics as Warhammer and Syruss32 were kicking along.

When all of a sudden Warhammer gets this pain and gives the sign, Syruss32 starts to go up thinking Warhammer meant to abort the dive (lucky for him) and Scubababy starts snapping off pics left and right. And right there in the smack dab middle of the ocean for God and everybody to see, Warhammer pulls what has now become the famous

Warhammer Manuver (http://user.intop.net/~greggg/images/deeprelief.jpg)

Be forewarned fair maiden, before you click on the above, put your drink down and get out your monitor towel cuz you're gonna need it. Also swallow whatever you have in your mouth.

Thank goodness Dee & I were off doing some nice safe PSR or we would have been on that trip also.

You just had to ask!

Bash, the worst part is he didn't remember gravity works underwater, He's about to get covered. If anyone has to perform this manuver please remember two things -- 1. Keep your head up. 2. This is a time for solo diving, your buddy doesn't need to see it.

Slowly ascend, release air from your BCD, and watch for boats and chunky bits.

(Good little PADI diver here:)
SAFE dive - Slowly Ascend From Every dive

SURELY you northen hemi people have some interesting substitutes for PADI's pre-dive check:

BWRAF - BCD, Weight belt, Regulator, Air, Friend
BWRAF - Begin With Really Awful Farts (that's some sort of comment on how you void unnecessary air to make descent easier)
BWRAF - Bunnies Will Run Away Fast (for the kiddies)
BWRAF - Burger with Relish and Fries

Bash,

You didn't have to tell us - "Good little PADI diver here" - we could tell from the use of BCD as an acronym, everyone else uses BC.

Tom, you beat me to it on TM's post of 2 vs 3.

I have a question, I have not seen it on this board but on others "DSAO".

Being somewhat of a newbie :D still, what does this stand for?

Inquiring minds need to know.

To further expound on the Warhammer Manuever, be thankful you do have your mask on so it covers your nose and eyes (and hope you have a seal) ;)

Pete, If you are near the surface, you are correct, but from 20 ft (possibly shallower) or deeper it definately sinks. There is no doubt on this issue. If you don't believe me give it a try.

Tom, I dispute anyone's right to use those initials in that manner hence the ™

those were chawin' tabaccy stains on the lens...

BTW, did you realise that Mr H was Russian??? AND that he coined the term "robot"??? Well sorta anyway, the term came from the russian verb "to work". A worker (in Russian) would be a robotat, to say "I worked..." would be "Ya Robotayou..." Except, of course, this is not the cyrillic which Russian is really written in.

:tease:

What DID you expect from a Russian major who never used his major??? Consider it my way of validating all those years at U of F!!!

Walter
November 13th, 2001, 06:43 AM
Pete, RAH added more than one word/term to our language -- waldos, and water bed are probably the most common, TANSTAAFL and grock are less commonly heard. I was not aware of Heinlein having a Russian background. I do know he did not speak Russian, but his wife did. Asimov, OTOH, was actually born in Russia.

Dos vedanya moi drook,

NetDoc

er, corrected! Walter, you are right it was Asimov and not Heinlein who gave us that term. You know, if it takes a man to admit he's wrong, than I am more man than most... of course that also means I am wrong more than most too! Sometimes I just get my fictional charactor generators mixed up!

xorosho... gavareesh li ti pa-ruccki??? U tak mne, vcyegda moi drook!!! (I wonder if KN can give us a little cyrillic here...)

:tease:

BTW, TANSTAFL is one of least understood maxims in the world today...

Blargh
November 13th, 2001, 09:17 AM
Actually, 'robot' was coined by an early (19th century?) Czech dabbler in what was to become 'science fiction', and NetDoc is quite correct in stating that the original meaning of the word is 'one that works'.

Strangely enough, I cannot for the life of me rememeber his name, but the story was about a .. well.. a robot, made primarily out of clay and stones.

Would love to get the name of that Czech... hope he's still not in the mail. My Russian Professor Gaspodin Sullivan (who was from Texas) told us of Asimov in a lecture about how the two languages are becoming more similar with today's communications (and this was in the seventies). He might have said made the term "popular", but I think he actually attributed it's creation to him. Transliteration instead of tranlation is becoming the norm, especially for technical words. The Russian word for machine is machinoo and for automobile is auftomobilia. When at UF I did many technical translations for the Chemistry department. My best single resource was the english chemical dictionary and NOT a Russian one. I learned to transliterate any "odd" sounding word into English and then hit that chemical dictionary. I remember one word in particular that my Russian professor even had a hard time with; "Perfoos" and "perfooskovat". It finally turned out to be perfusion in all it's conjugations and declensions... I got extra credit for figuring out that one.

:tease:

NetDoc
November 13th, 2001, 11:40 AM
Part of the premise of "A Clockwork Orange" was the melding of the two languages. You can hear things like "Lets go vidi some films... Vidyet is the verb "to see", and the "milk" bar with the Russian word for milk "moloka".

Probably the funniest Russian One liner is from Dan Akroyd in the bomb "Spies like Us", when after they accidentally launch the ICBM says the Russian equivalent of "EXCUSE US!" Shades of SNL!!!

NetDoc, now you got me investigating, which is a fancy way of saying "doing WORK" ... I thought the 11th commandement of "thy shalt not inflict work on thine brother IT profesional" was know world-wide .. *cough*

To the topic (?) at hand.. The world "robot" was first used (and thus invented?) by the Czech playwright Carel Capek [needs a small "v" on the C] in his play Rossum's Universal Robots, written in 1921, and translated into English, presumably for presentation/staging either in London or in New York (or both) in 1923.

Needless to say, the main credit for popularising the term goes to the God Supremo of Science Fiction, Isaac Asimov.

Some useless trivia: Carel Capek's robots themselves have also made it into various "non-scientific" fiction, where they are more often than not called golems.
