CIDA Customer Appreciation Day -Coastal Offshore Reefs (Deep Hole area)

Channel Islands Dive Adventures has the Explorer chartered for a trip down the coast towards County Line/Neptune’s Net area (Deep Hole area) on Sunday, October 28, 2012. Diving the offshore reefs down the coast can be very exciting as it is not a place where many divers get to dive from a boat. This is an exclusive CIDA trip that you will not find anywhere else. CIDA is the leader in coastal diving!

This trip is also a specially priced Customer Appreciation day trip because it is CIDA’s 3rd Anniversary.

All dives will be about 40’-80’ feet deep with a little exploring going on. Visibility can be from 20’-60’
The diving offshore along the coast can be excellent with its rocky reefs and kelp forests that are for the most part untouched by divers. Most of the areas are just too far for a diver to swim and with no dive boats going down the coast it can make for some awesome diving. The good thing is that the reefs are offshore far enough that visibility can be from 20’-60’. The coast can be very good for hunting and an excellent area for photographers. All dives will be about 40’-80’ feet deep with a little exploring going on and the visibility can be from 20’-60’.

• Time: board anytime after 7:30pm on Saturday evening or 7:00am on Sunday with the Explorer departing at 8:00am and the approx. time back to the dock is 5:30pm. The Explorer has lots of bunks and they will be on a 1st come basis.

Dive Report-Coastal Offshore Reefs trip (Deep Hole & Neptune's area) Oct. 28, 2012

I have learned from experience that if you want to dive the offshore areas around Deep Hole/ Neptune's/County Line then the best time is October to January. I can sure tell you that on this trip we were not disappointed because it was AWESOME!
This area is best after the east winds blow hard because it moves the dirty top layer out and replaces it with cooler cleaner water. The all time best is about right after a good wind event which is just what we had before this trip giving us flat calm seas, beautiful sunny skies and some excellent underwater conditions. The visibility was about 40'-50 ft. and the water temp was around the mid 60's. I can tell you that it just doesn't get much better than this unless you're in the tropics and that's debatable.

The other cool thing about diving this area is that CIDA is the leader. You may see other dive boats going there and most of them learned about the spots from other CIDA trips plus CIDA has a special weapon, underwater maps (similar to topo maps) that are made by a friend that you will not find anywhere else. It also helps that we have been diving this area for many years.

Anyways, the boat was only half full (or half empty) but that didn't stop us, no sense canceling when others are looking forward to the trip. We had 3 excellent dives at 2 spots that were about 70'-80' ft. deep and the 3rd was about 45'-50' ft. deep. Two of my friends on the boat both agreed that the dives we did were probably their best nudibranch dives of 2012 and they have done lots of diving. The Deep Hole/Neptune's/County Line offshore reefs can surprise anyone with what you will see form an abundance of nudi's and blue top ring snails to a healthy fish population and lobsters and more to the occasional Mola Mola. This could make a very interesting SoCal shootout trip!

Again, the Explorer and crew (Fidel, Candee & Steve) did an outstanding job and keeping us moving along with us getting our end of the day treat-Klondike bars (or 2 if you're lucky). Hope you can join us next time!
