It's a little short notice, but everyone is invited!

Calling All Divers and Ocean Lovers!!!
As you may know, sediment clogging the entrance to Marina del Rey's main channel was scooped up, shipped south and piped onto Redondo Beach, where it will help extend a narrowed section of beach shoreline.

This was a part of the Redondo Beach Renourishment Project that began back in July 2012 and ended during the early part of October 2012.

"Starting Thursday, August 9, 2012, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' multimillion-dollar dredging operation will shift gears. Sediment unearthed by the 2,095-ton Paula Lee dredge will either be dropped off the coast of Redondo Beach or pumped onto a swath of sand south of the pier."

During and since it's completion, enormous amounts of debris and trash have covered the ocean's substrate at the Vet's Park Redondo Beach dive site. It is not clear if the trash was brought to Redondo via the dredging project or unearthed due to the movement of the barge. Either way, the result is still the same: we have massive amounts of trash that is polluting the area and drifting throughout Southern California waters.

What we can do about it:
We can come together, as committed divers and fellow citizens, with non divers alike for a common good, a common goal, a purpose that serves the community by removing the trash.

What is needed:
1, Most importantly, you and your fellow dive mates with certification
2. Experienced night divers
3. Mesh hoop lobster bags preferred and/or small to medium sized mesh bags
4. Primary lights, back up lights/dive lights designed for night diving
5. Gloves (should be durable or padded to resist puncture from sharp objects)

Where:
Redondo Beach Vet's Park (Upper lot)
309 Esplanade
Redondo Beach, CA 90277

When:
Wednesday November 14, 2012

Time:
7pm

*For those of you who may not be comfortable with night diving, we will have continued efforts during the day in the near future. Please come down to show support and get involved this Wednesday even if you will not be diving

Photographers
There is going to be some flyers made this weekend for the event so we need to get a collection of photos to create the flyers. We are looking for pictures in the following categories:
Trash in the ocean or on the surface
Dead sea life (impacted by trash if possible)
etc
Please send all photos as soon as possible to: diversforabetterworld (at) gmail (dot) com.

Special thanks goes out to: Roc, a Regular Wednesday Night Vets Diver and LA County Scuba Instructor, for arranging this event. (I am just spreading the word )

Update: The first Wednesday night group clean up dive was a huge success!

On November 14, 2012:
31 divers picked up 57 pounds of trash from the area straight out from the main stairs.
Over 50 people total participated, with support from local dive groups, dive shops, and many individuals.
The shore support team managed safety, coordination, and weighed all the trash (which was taken away for closer examination and toxicity testing.

Thanks to Kathryn Kempton, we set up a "live catch" bucket with fresh sea water at the weigh station. We examined every bag of trash and moved all the little creatures we found into the Swimmin' Hole for later return to the sea.

A couple of us inspected the entire site the next day using scooters and it was remarkably successful.

Other areas still have huge amounts of trash, but the cleaned area looks great!

We'll continue the group effort each Wednesday, so watch here, Facebook, and www.Divematrix.com for updates.

Next Operation Hand Picked event: Wednesday, November 21, 2012.

Many thanks to Carlos for posting the first blazing notification here of just how bad the trash situation was after the sand deposition barge left and visibility cleared enough for recreational diving.

Carlos and several others have pulled pounds and more pounds of trash out of Vets with every dive. It's getting slowly better.
The big organized events offer the fun of focussing on one spot at a time and seeing a DRAMATIC difference with a few hours of collaborative effort.

See you at Vets!
Bring Lobster/Trash bags and lend a hand.
(Thanks for inspecting the trash closely afterwards. The little octopuses can hide in the smallest refuse and we've found several we returned successfully to the sea right after.)
