This Thursday, Houston Chronicle columnist Loren Steffy will be speaking to us about his book The Man Who Thought Like a Ship.

The book is about an electrician from a tiny Pennsylvania town who at 47 years old, without any formal training and with a wife and two children, left his career behind to became the first person ever to reconstruct an ancient ship from its sunken fragments. In the process he helped create the field of nautical archaeology, eventually being named a full professor at Texas A&M University and a MacArthur Foundation Fellow. That man was his father. An Amazon reviewer calls it “a remarkable book about a remarkable man.”

Books will also be for sale if you would like to get one autographed by the author. Like all of the CHUM meetings, this is a presentation not to miss!

As usual, the meeting will be at the Stag's Head Pub (2128 Portsmouth Street), which is just off Shepherd near US-59. The meeting will begin at 7:30p, but feel free to come early and stay late to visit with members and guests.

If you would like to buy a book on Thursday for the author to autograph, they'll be for sale for $34.10, including tax. They've told me they can accept cash, check or credit cards.

If you already have a copy of the book, you're welcome to bring that to be autographed as well.

Hope you can join us!
