I remember after T/S 'Debbie' last fall of a major sink hole that developed along I-10 around the Gainsville exit as I was one of the last to make it through just prior to the closing down to all east bond traffic.

With the eventual receding of flood waters, I'm curious, is there a waiting time period to insure the Springs are safe from roof collapses or other possible dangers as result of these floods. I've heard of cave ins as result of low pressure due to low water levels..but with high water levels may also cause some integrity situations from high pressures.

I guess an analogy would be like inspecting the NYC's 1800's dated water tunnels for leaks..

Not that I'm aware of. I think the last big collapse in JB happened about a year and a half after JB was blown out due to a bunch of rain. Did one have to do with the other? I couldn't tell you. I suppose it just depends on how stable the various areas in the caves are. Some may collapse within the first month after and some may take several months.

All karst is active, and I am sure that some environmental issues will facilitate it,but either way it is going to happen. I have been in several caves during some major movement, and each time was random with no specific event ie flooding. I think the big thing is be aware of what you are seeing. For example active debris piles are not a good place to linger. There is one cave we are working that has a choked out sink overhead with trash on the floor. Team policy is we don't linger there, and we stay close to the side wall, not the center of the passage where there is debris mound.
