This past week my class had a discussion about heroes. A question was asked, "If you could spend a day with someone from the past or present, who would it be?" A thought provoking question, but considering my draw to the sea, I said Jacques Cousteau. Who are some other heroes in our realm of interest?

President of NABS (National Assoc. of Black Scubadivers) & NO you don't have to be black to be a member.

He has certified over 3000 underpriviledge kids for absolutely nothing. He has diven, dived, dove, doved, doven or whatever (Where's Joewr when I need him) in every major and most minor bodies of water on this planet. (Thanks to KN for pointing out such a modern day legend to me)

So many of the ancients...
And in modern times my father holds first place.
But secondly, for the twentieth century, I think C. Wade McClusky.

That sea battle is arguably the most important battle of the 20th Century. It was the turning point in the Pacific War. It demonstrated beyond anyone's doubt the value of carriers if there were any doubters after Pearl Harbor. It demonstrated the indispensibility of the code breakers in modern warfare. The dificiencies in the American fliers' ability to form up and make the completely coordinated attack planned was noted and corrected. With the possible exception of some glitches at Guadocanal and Halsey's error at Leyte, the US Navy conducted a near perfect effort in the Pacific for the rest of the war. After Midway we became the most formidable navy in the world and have never relinquished that role since!

Some may say the D-Day was the most important battle of the 20th Century, but I think D-Day might never had happened were it not for Midway.

While I this is off the topic, I think it would be interesting to have Admirals Spruance and Nagumo in the same room at the same time to talk about Midway! Heck, let's invite McCluskey along, too, for an eye witness account!

I have so many "heroes" that it is hard to select. Maybe it would be fun to have George Washington around for a day and to hear what he thinks about the country he helped to create?

Yes, Midway's McClusky. Commander of Airwing Six, he was flying a dive bomber (SBD).

I like this kind of question but only when it's worded differently.

"If you could spend one day with someone, living or dead, who would it be?"

The answer should be "the living one, of course. Do you think I'm stupid?!" :D

Seriously though, the thread did ask 'in our realm', so I'll have to go with either of the two Jacques - Cousteau or Mayol. Cousteau for my love of scuba and Mayol for Freediving.

Sheck Exley-He literally "wrote the book" (several books, actually) on safe cave diving practices. He was the first in the world to log over 1,000 cave dives. In over 29 years of cave diving, he made over 4,000. At Cathedral Canyon Spring in Florida, he achieved a world record penetration of over two underwater miles during an eleven and a half hour solo dive in 1990. In March of 1989, using Trimix, he descended to a world record depth of 881 feet, returning to the surface after 14 hours of decompression with no harmful effects. He died in 1994 trying to complete a record dive to over 1000 feet. When his body was recovered, his depth guage read 879 feet. He was the father of cave diving, a pioneer in use of trimix and spent his life trying to learn as much about diving as possible.
The story of that final dive can be found at:

dive related? Terrence Tysall (actually, I've been on the same
dive boat with him and talked to him for several minutes. But
it'd be more better to spend the day diving with him. Know what
I mean?) George Irvine and Jarrod Jablonski would also
be interesting and educational.

non-dive related? Patrick Henry.

I'd like to change this thread to:

"If you could spend one NIGHT with someone, living or dead, who would it be?"

Except that I would remove the "dead" option.....this isn't halloween!!

Now the answer to that question wouldn't be Jacques Cousteau.

Definitely ether George Clark or Merryweather Lewis.
Or for our UK friends, Richard Burton (not the actor)
Or in the diving realm George Harris who is no longer with us.

If I could spend a day with an old dive buddy, the late CDR Clark Presswood would be my choice. He was a good friend and great dive buddy.

I must add that Dee Scar is also great. I filmed with her once and she was awesome. It was a segment for a TV show that did not make it called "Today's Diver". Dee and Chris Reeves were the talents. Dee did some amazing things that really made me see diving in a different light.

In the diving realm, my choice would be Eugenie Clark, but in truth, I'd much rather it would be one of a number of famous artists that I like.

There are so many fascinating people from the past that have helped promote this sport, science, exploration, technology, and so forth that choosing just one would be hard to do. But, that's ok because I do not believe that I would want to spend time with the great people of history. I work with the sick and dying and meet many different & interesting people day in and day out; I would like to spend time with them before their illness to see how they truely were before their afflication. Or even walking into a nursing home and choosing someone from there to spend time with prior to them ending up there, to see how they truely were. I feel that would be the best day that one could spend: sharing one's life with someone else and learning something new.
