(DiverWire) The last week of June will certainly stand out in the memories of more than 100 divers who came together in Bonaire for the annual “Scubaboard Invasion.” The annual event, held this year at the Plaza Resort, showed once again what a powerful social-media force the Scubaboard community has become. According to Scubaboard’s Pete Murray (known as NetDoc on the popular site), “We only had two rules the whole week – make sure you dive and make sure you have fun. Judging from the smiles on everyone’s face, we succeeded in both.”

Scubaboard basically took over the resort and filled each dive boat, including an extra vessel brought over from Curacao. Divers enjoyed a variety of diving opportunities and participated in a wide array of contests including an underwater scavenger hunt, photo contests and a special “find the prize underwater” challenge that no one actually won. But almost everyone who took part came home a winner.Murray said this year’s invasion, the first to travel to Bonaire, took many months to plan and was spearheaded by Dennis and Roxanne Harmon. The couple volunteered countless hours and time and energy to make sure every detail was addressed and that everyone had fun.
The event also gave divers the opportunity to interact with several sponsoring companies including Light and Motion, Mocean Armor, andVivid-Pix. Since a large number of participants dove with cameras and video recorders, it was appropriate that these sponsors helped educate and motivate participants.
Light and Motion conducted a series of demo dives highlighting fluorescent encounters during night dives, while Mocean Armor showed divers how to safely shoot underwater with the iPhones. Vivid-Pix opened up more than a few eyes with its photo enhancement software designed for amateur and novice underwater shooters.
“I can’t wait until next year,” said one enthusiastic participant. “I met a lot of new friends, made some new dive buddies and look forward to the next ‘Invasion’.”

Murray said Scubaboard, the world’s largest online scuba diving community, enthusiastically embraces its role as the leading social media outlet for scuba divers both domestically and around the world. The overwhelming response to this year’s event, (along with previous stops in the Keys and Cozumel), have encouraged Murray and his Scubaboard team to actively seek out new and different destinations for future invasions.

“We don’t know exactly where we will have ‘Invasion 2014’, but we DO know that it will be a perfect place for members of our scuba diving community to escape, relax and enjoy some great diving,” Murray concluded.
