I just got back from a family vacation to Roatan (there were only two divers in the bunch) and wanted to recommend a fantastic dive operator, Reef Gliders, we dove with on our trip. One of the divers was a newbie (his first boat dive) and the dive masters were great to work with him to ensure that his first few dives were enjoyable. The dive groups were small (3-4 at most with a dive master) and the service was excellent. We used their rental equipment for several dives and it was in top notch shape as well. Here are some of the dive sites we visited:
-Seaquest: Absolutely amazing dive! Reef was in fantastic shape and we saw a ton of sea life (4 eagle rays, 6 turtles, several large grouper). Vis was excellent (40-50' as well)
-Jumping Jack: Dive was so-so, visibility was down from Seaquest. Did not see a lot of sea life. Even a so-so dive in Roatan beats Texas swamp diving any day.
-Turtle Crossing:Good beginners dive. Reef is fairly shallow here. We did see several turtles and large fish.
-Robins Nest:Great dive, we went fairly deep along the wall...the reef was in good shape with a lot of soft coral at depth.
By the way, we stayed at an amazing VRBO rental (Sunset House West End Vacation Rental - VRBO 320463 - 4 BR Roatan House in Honduras, Beach Front Sunset House with Dock & Swimming Platform) and used At your Service Roatan concierge to handle arrangements for part of our trip. (www.atyourserviceroatan.com). We met Sue-Ann Solomon (the owner) on the dock one night shortly before we left. She arranged an awesome birthday dinner for us at Roatan Oasis (fantastic restaurant) and handled our pre-check in at the airport the day we departed. Saturdays are extremely busy at the airport and travelers can normally expect to spend 2-3 hours waiting in line for check in. Thanks to Sue-Ann we spend those 2 hours on West Bay Beach and only had to show up 45 minutes before our flight. We highly recommend both!
I would also highly recommend the dolphin snorkel at AKR. Both the divers and non divers in our family absolutely loved it. Nothing beats being able to swim and dive with these amazing creatures.
