We are two middle age, low-maintenance beach bums (Cape May, NJ) who love snorkeling. We usually head south to the lower Florida Keys or the Caribbean mid-February. Our idea of a perfect vacation is an uncrowded place with a hot shower, quiet sleeping, decent drinks, good, reasonably priced food, no floating skyscrapers, and a beach to hang out from which we can snorkel. The idea of spending five grand a week at some froufrou place just does not cut it for us.

Our trip to Bonaire was great for snorkeling and otherwise, but the lack of any real beaches precludes a return visit (at least for now).
We have read great things about beach snorkeling on Roatan and it sounds like an ideal place for us to visit, but the number of negative online posts about the island vis-à-vis bugs, crime, and disease is enough to make us cross it off our list. We have no desire for a Rooseveltian trip-up-the-amazon excursion.

So here is the question: What are your recommendations for a place where we can hang out and snorkel directly from the beach?

To help stir the pot, here is a list of places we found of interest online but which we cannot make a definitive decision. We are not tied to any of them, so please feel free to add your own suggestions.

Anegada, BVI
Eleuthera
Providenciales, Turks & Caicos
Roatan
St. Croix, USVI
St. John, USVI
St. Lucia
Vieques

Thanks.

We're going to St. John USVI! Found a great place via VRBO.com and input from the the forums on Tripadvisor.com.

Nice. STJ is pretty. We go over there from STT usually on the weekend. Its quiet... Lots of good places.... well OK places IMO. Honeymoon is nice a short walk and if you get in the water and go FAR left you will see some BIG elk horns tarpon and turtles. Waterlemon is nice (a fairly long but easy flip flop hike) and secluded but go on a Monday... usually less cruise ships in STT that day and less people. I regularly see sharks there... mostly nurse and lemon, nothing too scary. Theres ALWAYS turtles there. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are busiest. Weekends are usually busy. Cinnamon is good and honestly I love Trunk Bay. Its gets CROWDED so go early but its beautiful adn theres some decent snorkeling if you go out farther than most of the other people. Unfortunately morons climb up on the rocks and bash the coral with their fins. So coral is limited to sea fans and such. There are some decent brain corals and at least one huge elkhorn far out on the left side of the little island. Youll know what Im talking about when you see it. The sand is fine as sugar, bring a cooler and sunscreen and float all day. If you go to the FAR right of trunk you will see stingrays, tarpon and lots of bait balls... sometimes eels too. I took this at trunk:

I hope you're prepared for the cost of STJ. Its EEEEEEEExpensive! A sandwich will run ya $20. It'll be a damn good sandwich thou. I hope you know that here is no hospital on STJ or police or anything past like 6 p.m. Make sure your rental is safe... and dont get hurt lol. STJ is pretty safe in general but get a few numbers for emergencies.

Sooo jealous! Spent a week snorkeling all about last year, had an amazing time. Favorites - Waterlemon is great and really not that far of a walk, totally worth it. Haulover North ( not south) is also great and if you are out that way hit up Vies snack shop. Cinnamon is great on non STT cruise ship days. Also if you want a hike, go out to Brown bay, lots of conch and turtles in the grass and then, rays, fish and coral out at the left and right openings of the bay. St. John is a magical place for sure. The food there was so so except for Vie's. Enjoy and please write us a trip report when you get back!

To quote from a book we bought about St. John:
“St. John is not large, not too developed, not very populous, and not very sophisticated. If your idea of a dream vacation features glitzy nightlife, tons of shopping, noisy casinos, and lots of people – you are on the wrong island.
However, if you have arrived on St. John in search of natural beauty, friendly people, a vibrant community, and a pristine environment – then you are exactly in the right place

We found the right place for us.

Find the "hidden gem" St.Vincent. Unfound, no big resorts or crowded beaches. Pristine beaches of every color with world class snorkeling right off shore. No boat ride needed. Shallow calm bays with thriving reefs. 3-1 exchange rate WAY less expensive than St.John. Everything you're looking for and more. Waterfalls, rainforests, easy island hopping all at affordable pricing. Look us up and we'll help you save even more when planning. Visit our website and you can see lots of snorkel and diving pictures and lots of info. on St.Vincent. Notoriously clear waters. The super rich have kept St.Vincent and the Grenadines to themselves for a long time. We've made it affordable and want to share it with the diving community who can appreciate it's wealth and beauty. This is how the Caribbean "used to be".
