Sorry i know this must have been discussed a thousand times.. but i can't find it.

can somebody help me find the chart that compares Luxfer and Catalina tanks?

I found a youtube video... it shows the Catalina tanks as lighter when empty?? i thought they are heavier and more negative when empty compared to luxfer?

I dive luxfer Al80s a lot.... i've decided to buy Al100 tanks for a different kind of diving... i thought it would be heavier at the end of the dive.. instead i was starting to float at 10ft while doing deco. it was a luxfer by the way. I thought Luxfer Al80 and Luxfer Al100 have the same characteristic? If I had used a Catalina Al100.. would i be more neutral or negative?

btw. with the Luxfer Al80 my bouyancy has been dialed in.

ok ... looking at the chart im getting more confused..

which one should i get? Luxfer Al100? or the Catalina C100??

I dive tropical... i need the capacity for spearfishing.

I dive with a skin only.

In the 100, I'd go for steel (E7-100) just to get an extra 8 to 13 pounds off my back.

I would get a steel tank. Less weight on your belt and they outlast an aluminum.

Early on, the 2 Catalina 80's that I had were noticeably heavier than the Luxfers of the day. These older Catalinas also seemed very butt heavy. About 10 years later, when I got 2 more Catalinas, they seemed to be about the same weight as the Luxfers. At that time, of my 22 80's there were 18 Luxfers, 2 old Catalinas, and 2 newer Catalinas. I could really notice when I picked up the older Catalinas. I suspect that Catalina decided that they did not need so much aluminum in their tanks.

I prefer my Luxfer AL80's to my Catalinas. The Cat's are very negative when full and don't work well with my monkey diving rig (no BC). They're too heavy. I also don't like the oddball 3300 fill pressure, a lot of shops overlook this and I don't get a full tank unless I point it out to them beforehand. What stupid tanks. THey are my only regret of gear purchase I've ever made. But I didn't know any better at the time and got a great deal on them. My Luxfer's are "JUST right" neutral at the beginning of the dive and then go pretty positive when empty. But I just carry an extra 2lbs of weight to help with this. When diving with a full BC though, none of this info matters, I just strap them on and go.

I also agree with a few others... get steel tanks if you go larger. I need no extra weight when diving with any of mine. LP tanks are great if you can get them with a + rating (slight overfills, holds more gas!) or if you can find a shop that will pump them up to 4K :)
