National Marine Sanctuaries Maritime Heritage Program

About the National Marine Sanctuaries Maritime Heritage Program

Will be our Guest Speaker at our November 20th meeting, 7:30 PM St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Meeting Room, Chestnut and Washington Streets, Union , NJ.

His talk will include:

The recent work of the Maritime Heritage Program, focusing on three early 19th century 4300-foot deep wrecks in the Gulf of Mexico, the 3D sonar mapping of the Civil War wreck USS Hatteras off Galveston, some 1200 deep submersible dives off Pearl Harbor, and of course, the Robert J. Walker off Atlantic City. His presentation will focus on his Department’s work and “what we do, why we do it, and how we do it, with a special emphasis on how we reach out to various partners and the public, and what the approach of no sanctuary, no permits will mean in regard to the Walker wreck.” Also he will be prepared to discuss NOAA’s and the US Coast Guard's involvement in the Remediation of Underwater Legacy Environmental Threats.
