Grand Turk in December anyone?

We're going to Bohio Resort Dec 7-15

This has been on our "maybe" list for a long time. We keep defaulting to the t&c explorer instead. I would be interested in your feedback.

I went there in 2006. You will have a great time. Do some snorkeling off the beach which is a beautiful white sand beach... You will typically see spotted eagle rays. Also, when I was there, the food was the best I've ever had at a dive resort. Not sure the same people are there now.

Dec20-Jan5 with GTDivers, staying at a condo. Can't wait...16 days and counting!!! Will be celebrating Christmas and New-yrs at Bohio though.

We stayed a Bohio Dive Resort Dec 7-15, 2013 for our wedding and honeymoon. The resort is located on the beach on the west (leeward) side of the island. We paid about $2,400 for 2 people. Included was breakfast, lunch and 2 dives daily. Dinners, the bar tab and tips were separate. We also did a night dive that was separate.

The rooms were simple but clean, with air conditioning, plenty of closet space, a balcony and TV. The bed was pretty comfortable.

The dive operation is right there at the resort. Most of your gear is placed onto the boat by the dive master, and the trip out to the wall takes about 5 minutes. Air only, no Nitrox. The first dive leaves at 9:00 a.m., and you come back to the resort for the surface interval before the second dive.

The restaurant had really great food, some of the best food we have ever had at a dive resort. It's definitely one of the best aspects of Bohio resort. Dinner averaged about $18 for salads and $25 for entrées. Everything on the menu was really good, from salads to steaks to seafood. We ended sharing lunch and dinner because there was just too much food.


The outdoor bar had a really nice ambience, as it is located right on the beach. One Friday and Saturday night a reggae band plays at the bar until late, which is great if you like reggae, not so great if you want to get some sleep. (I don't like reggae - I love it.) Local beers were a reasonable $4 each.


Mixed drinks, like piña coladas, were $14 and had little or no detectable alcohol. I recommend going to the liquor store on the island and getting your own booze.

There is a FANTASTIC wall dive directly out in front of Bohio called the Black Forest. It is closest to the resort (200 yards) and the best dive. Often there was a very slight current along the wall, parallel to the shore. The current was strong enough that you should plan to head against the current at the start of the dive.

Other random throughts....

The mosquitos ate me alive on Grand Turk but didn't bother my wife. Take some mosquito repellent.

The Turks & Caicos airline that flies into Grand Turk uses very small aircraft. We re-checked our bag in Providenciales, but my wife's dive gear didn't make it on the flight with us to Grand Turk. It didn't make the next flight, either. Or the next flight. Her bag finally arrived the next morning on the 3rd flight as we were sitting around getting ready to get on the boat. So.... take important stuff in your carry-on luggage (like prescription masks) in case your suitcase doesn't follow you to Grand Turk. Next time I will try a bribe to get our bags on our flight.

The Providenciales airport was an INSANE ASYLUM on the weekend. If you can avoid flying through there on the weekend, then avoid it. There is no air conditioning there were and a billion people crammed into the holding area. There weren't even enough seats for everyone waiting, so a lot of people just stood around for hours.

When people talk about "Provo," they're talking about Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos, not Provo, Utah.

I am there the first week of Feb. Willing to buy the first beer during the Super Bowl, at Bohio or later in the week in town.
