Hi,

I'm going to be in Maui in early March and will be doing some boat diving but also two days of shore diving. Please share some experiences. Here are a few dives we had in mind.

1. Mala Pier
2. Makena Landing
3. ?
4. ?

We're doing Black Rock as a night dive so I'm leaving it off the list. I'd really like to do Mala Pier and Makena Landing which leaves a few other possibilities. We did Kamaole II/III in the past but we'll skip them this trip.

I've heard that Manta Rays can be spotted on Olawalu or Ukumehame. Is it possible to do the Carthaginian as a shore dive without a scooter? I carry a large camera and not sure I could carry it while using a scooter.

thx
Chris

Couple suggestions:
Ulua Beach
Mile 14 (towards Lahaina)

All shore dives on Maui are great. Depending on where you are staying, there are lots of options. Here's a link to various sites. I love Makena, great night dive...Ulua, Five Graves, and Polo Beach. I have snorkeled the Kam beaches but never dived there. Best wishes on a great trip.

A lot depends on where you are staying.

Honolua Bay up north is an excellent dive, but a bit of a hike. Mala is a must-do, no matter where you stay, IMO. In the Kihei area, we often dive Ulua Beach. There are two reefs there -- if you swim out along the inshore reef until it turns north, and a little further, and then turn left, you'll get onto the second reef, which is quite extensive. Polo Beach on the far right-hand side has some wonderfully healthy corals. Makena Landing is great for a very sheltered entry, and although people complain about the surface swim, by Seattle standards, it's not much. Ahihi is also an easy entry (although it can be slippery) but parking there is pretty limited.

Having done the Carthaginian from shore on a scooter, I'd say that's not a possible dive without one. Lahaina Divers does do the Carthaginian as a twilight dive and the Mala Pier at night, and that's worth the boat fee.

Hope this helps out.

1. Mala Pier Very good and easy dive, lots to see reef sharks, turtles and lots of fish
2. Makena Landing Very good and easy dive also, you have the bubble cave and others. Reef sharks and turtles also
3. ? BEST OF THE Best- Scooter diving with Maui Scooter Divers - Maui's Scooter Diving Specialists - Come scuba Diving with us! Great people and you can go and do and see things you cannot do without them AAA+++
4. Black rock good dive day or night
Also I may be back in march, if I do go we will look you up for a dive

Thx for the replies. One more question, do any shops let you rent two tanks at the same time? Last trip I remember we had an issue with one shop because they only let us rent one tank at a time.

Where are you staying? If you're in/near Kihei, rent your tanks, weights, and flag from Maui Dreams. They'll let you rent 2 tanks at a time. Don't forget the flag though DLNR checks!

We've never had any trouble renting two tanks at B&B.

We're staying in Kaanapali but will probably be shore diving near Kihei.
