Hello Windy City,

It seems like a long time since I lived there and I am starting to miss it. There are a few of us Northeast Wreck divers that are looking to dive the Sub that is the in Lake Michigan (250+ft) and I was wondering if anyone that can recommend a good Charter Boat and a Shop where we can get O2 and He?

Thanks

Try Chicago Dive Charters (312) 842-1480. They are based out of Burnhan
Harbor. Nice fast boat.

Shops with tmx:

Scuba Systems (Skokie)

Adventures in Paradise (Wheeling)

Charters out of Burnham Harbor are a mess right now. Chicago Dive Charters sold the Kohana over the winter and is still looking for a boat to replace it with - bad news, indeed. Discovery Charters wasn't very active last year and I don't know if he's coming back. Great Lakes Explorer and M/V Up and Under will probably be back but they aren't really geared up for technical diving.

Three good to excellent technical operators:

Shipwreck Adventures (Various WI harbors)

Enterprise Marine (Waukegan)

Nordic Diver (Milwaukee)

Not always completely up to date, but a terrific resource:

I was aware of these charters, just didn't know what wreck he was referring to. I've never heard of a sub in 250fsw in Lake Michigan before. Any background on this Newreckdiver? Numbers?

Just going from memory...

A WWI German submarine (U-97, I think?) that was paraded around for a few years after the war and then sunk as target practice by a raised and re-named Eastland.

It was discovered a couple of years ago by A&T Recovery as part of their extensive side-scanning project. Getting the numbers may well require the willingness to inflict severe pain or a whole slew of unnatural acts. Something like 20 miles offshore, somewhat north of Chicago proper, is my understanding. It may sit in more than 250 feet of water, although the way the levels have been dropping over the past couple of years our children might be able to walk out to it.

Google should hit something - there is info out there.

Hi,

I am a diving instructor and a charter boat captain with a multitude of deep dives. I hve a 26 foot boat that sleeps six that is set up for tek diving. I currently live in Indianapolis, Ind and am looking to get together with other divers this spring summer and fall to do diving in the great lakes. send me any info that you have about the sub. if it exists I can find it and would be more than happy to stay on the boat to tend to surface operations so you and a crew could do the dive. good luck.

Check out The Great Lakes Diving Guide by Chris Kohl. The UC-97 was a war prize that was kept in Chicago until the Treaty of Vesailles called for it's destruction. Accordingly, it was taken out into Lake Michigan and sunk for target practice in 1921. It was located by the Navy in 1977.

Supposedly according to plans to raise the sub and put it on exhibit at the Muesem of Science and Industry it is illegal to dive. Hence, there are no published numbers for it.
