The latest issues of DAN's 'Alert Diver' has an interesting article that links reef damage to sunscreen washing off diver's bodies.

They list an alphabet soup of ingredients known to be harmful, but no specific recommendations that are considered safe.

Does anyone have a list of effective (lets say SPF > 40) blocks that are reef-safe?

Actually they do give examples, a French product called Evoa and a British one called Aethic Sovee. Neither are particularly affordable 150 ml tube of Aethic Sovee is > $91 (plus shipping) !!!

I don't know of a list offhand, but if you do a search for threads with "sunscreen" in the title you can find a number of threads in which people have mentioned products that are believed to be less harmful to reefs.

I have used Smartshield for a few years it is reef safe and works great the SPF 30 will not let you burn, I have blonde hair and very fair skin with no issues even in Mexico. The best part is I can use it on my face and doesn't fog or burn eyes with mask on. Tackledirect.com has great price on it. I actually just got done ordering a couple more tubes of it today. The 4oz tubes last me about 2 weeks of boat diving.
