I'm a PADI DM but have pretty much been working as a videographer. I am currently in Koh Tao, Thailand but always thought it would be enjoyable to do my IDC around the great barrier reef and from what I understand, Cairns is the largest hub for that (i.e. more opportunity for work)

I know obviously cost of living is much more expensive than Thailand, but being somewhere more 1st world wouldn't be all bad. I have never been to Cairns and so any advice on resorts, where to do the IDC, pay / cost of living, etc would all be greatly appreciated.

Probably the biggest is Pro Dive Cairns. I don't think they do internships though. They may take you on as an employee if they have positions open - but no guarantees.

House prices average between $200 per week for a 1 bedroom apartment outside the city to about $450 per week for a studio/1 bed in the city.

It is not like Thailand where the reef is either right on your doorstep or a 15 minute boat ride to reach - the GBR is a fair whack out to sea. Day trips out to the reef typically depart at 0800 and return at 1700 - a full 9 hours and you may only get 2 dives. The diving on day trips is also relatively average. For the good dives, you will need to be on a liveaboard.

My suggestion would be to do your IDC in Thailand then attempt employment in Cairns - have a look into the 462 visa here. It is not a cheap prospect for a US citizen.

Thanks for the info. Something to marinade on

That sounds like exactly what I would be looking for but it is extremely expensive compared to just the IDC
