I'll be in Oahu from Aug. 15-25. I was going with two friends who don't dive and was just going to take a couple of dive trips. They both flaked on me so I would like to take AOW and then do like 4-5 days of two tank boat dives, maybe some shore dives. Any recommendations for a good boat/instructor. I am staying at HI Waikiki Beachcomber if that makes any difference.

Give Kaimana and Hawaiian Diving Adventures a call.

Gabe I'll give you a call in the next couple of days. What are water temps like?

Looking really nice now...... high 70s and even 81 or so in the shallower spots on the North Shore. Generally our Advanced Open Water Course is 3 days:

Day 1: Shallow/Shallow..... 2 Tank Boat Dive
Day 2: Deep/Shallow........ 2 Tank Boat Dive
Day 3: Deep/Shallow......... 2 Tank Boat Dive

Plenty of great wrecks and reefs to check out and we'll likely focus on these 5 areas. Deep, Boat, Wreck, Navigation and Peak Performance Buoyancy. If you notice, the PADI Advanced Course is set up as 5 adventure dives. Your bonus dive is usually your first on day 1 and can be used to get a gauge on your buoyancy, air consumption, buddy awareness and other basic dive skills that may need a tune up if it's been some time since you bubbled. Please let me know if you have more questions and drop me an email on the contact form on our website to discuss scheduling.

I have yet to see a shark under water. How optimistic would it be to hope I see one while diving off of Oahu?

You're almost certain to see multiple smallish (4' to 8' are common) white tip reef sharks, either swimming around or hiding under a coral ledge. The YO-257, 100' Hole, Pinnacles, and Navy Tug all seem to generate them, plus the shallower reef ledges.

Tiger sharks, Galapagos sharks, and hammer heads occasionally pop up, too, but are a lot less common at most rec places/depths.
