Check out Roatan Marine Parks Facebook and their posted rules .https://www.facebook.com/pages/Roatan-Marine-Park/100064028855?fref=nf

Please be aware that according to the rules and regulations of the Bay Islands National Marine Park and the Honduran Normativas de Buceo all divers must be lead by a dive professional with local training. If, as a dive centers you choose to rent tanks please also rent your DMs or Instructors!

That is:
1) Funny (considering the local bipolar angst)
2) Predictable (the DNA of Honduran socioeconomic protectionism)
3) Unenforcabe (the toothless tiger with no backbone)
4) having no practical application (a rule in search of a violator)

Interesting. The link you give says "according to the rules and regulations" but when you go to the RPM website and read the rules and regulations, it says nothing about this. Of course, it is not a very good website because it also neglects to say where the RMP boundaries are....

Can you give more information? Is it possible this is more about protecting Roatan's divemasters than it is about protecting Roatan's reefs?
Clearly, I'm skeptical.

Interesting. I'll be shore diving from CCV in less than 21 days....

Doc - What is the "outrageous tax" that Leon posted about on the facebook post that they just added? I haven't been to Roatan since 5/2013 and probably haven't kept up with a lot of the changes.....even though I read this specif board daily.

Was that another increase in the national Honduran Hotel Tax?

Not dissimilar to how we are trying to balance our US Budget.

But, I have no idea what the increase is all about. Just another cost of doing business to get to one of my top 3 favorite Caribbean destinations.

Ask "Leon"?

Who does that affect except Anthony's Key? Are they even in the park?

Yep, looks like he was just talking about the 18% tax.

Hey Doc,

Re: Hotel tax
So is this something that we pay upon arrival to hotel?
We pre-paid our AI (dives/transport/hotel) ahead of time. Should we expect to pay more "at the door"?

Glad to hear it's in your top 3 Caribbean dests. Trust your judgement & advice you've given elsewhere.

FYI - I'll be shore (!!) diving there in 6 days (next Friday) so will post if I hear any rumblings about this pro(DM)led policy.
Will post trip report when we're back in N.Amer, later Jan.

Doug

Typically it's paid upfront with your hotel reservations. I know that's how it works at ccv and if I remember correctly I did at reef house as well.

I think it's currently 19%... 15% Sales Tax and a 4% Hotel Tourism Tax..

FYI, some places will give you a significant discount if you pay cash...

As a general rule dive shops in West End and West Bay haven't been renting tanks for shore diving. I was told something was written that prohibited unescorted shore diving, but I never saw it. In any event, I doubt this is going to have any impact on CCV shore diving on the other side of the island.
