and my wife would like to go to the Red Sea. I'm game,
but know less than nothing about getting there or where
to go. Anyone got any ideas? I'd like to visit someplace that we're paying off rather than fighting. I would take a lousy hostage picture.

I worked in Sham el sheik, loved it, go to a UK message board or divernet then ask the guys there! they go to the red sea all the time.

Sharm el Sheik is a good bet. Grab a flight from Detroit to your favorite European destination, then take a direct flight to Sharm. Egypt is as safe as any place for tourists. And the diving is wonderful. I was just there in January with some friends and we had a great time. Something to consider...if you can't travel to the places you want to go for fear of being taken captive, doesn't that mean that you are, in essence, a hostage now? I would encourage you you to go to Egypt and dive, You will enjoy it!

By the way, I am also American and experienced a little curiosity, but absolutely no animosity. Just treat the Egyptians with the courtesy and respect they deserve and they will do the same for you and your wife.

I hope you'll go, have a fantastic time and write a trip report for us.

We did some liveaboards out of Hurghada... amazing! :thumb:

However, I still may wait until things settle down a bit in the Middle East before I go back.

it depends very much what you're after. sharm and hurghda are very busy places. hurghada in high season is something like florida in spring brake.

so make up your mind. sharm is excellent, if you want to party all night and dine out.

if you want some good dives and just relax, go to the "deep south" (marsa alam) there you have just your resort and nothing besides. the resorts are excellent with pools ect.

if you are keen on diving then you guys should book a liveaboard. there you do a min. of 3 dives per day.
