Howdie,

I'm a diver from the province of Quebec and I've heard great things about diving in Newfounland. One question I'd like to get answered: How cold is the water around end of July, beginning of August ?

I do not own a dry suit neither do I have the training to dive with a dry. Is it possible to dive in Newfoundland with a two piece wetsuit ? I did ice diving back in March of this year and had 2 piece wetsuit and wasn't cold. I have to say that the dive was quite short, 15 minutes.

Thanks in advance,

qcdiver

I can't really speak for the rock, but here in Nova Scotia, people dive in wetsuits. Last weekend I was taking pics of an open water class at a popular shore site, and we had 60 F... mind you we were only in about 25 feet of water. The offshore wrecks seem to be hovering in the high 30's to low 40's for the most part (at depth... 100 ft or so) ... and there is usually at least one brave soul on the boat in a wetsuit.

I wouldn't expect the newf's to have much colder temps than that.... you could swing it, especially if you did an ice dive wet.

Hi all...

Temps finally crossed the 40 F mark a month or so ago... I have enjoyed some diving in temps as warm as 45F....

Although it depends upon where you go...you can still find temps in the 30's with some depth 100ft+...

Dove yesterday and it was 41F at 20Ft... Which was chiller than I expected...

Many locals dive wet here... So wet suit diving is very common in the summer months....

Hope that helps... too bad you didnt post sooner... I could have arranged for a trip for you.... I have a friend on route here right now from St. Hubert Qu. He is arriving on Monday and will be here at my place for 2 weeks of diving. He would have probably liked having the company and someone to chip in on the Gas. Oh well maybe next time.

If you (anyone for that matter) are ever coming down this way, drop me a line and I can help you out with info and set up some dives etc...

Cheers

You can dive wet no problem. I did the Bell Island Wrecks.. well PLM 27... in January. I was the only diver diving wet on one of the days... it was cold, but once I added some hot water the second dive i was fine.. As for summer, I am heading up there this month on the 24th for a week of diving with Ocean Quest Charters. I am diving dry, but bringing my wetsuit along. You should be fine diving wet.

If you can get up diving.. it's excellent diving... Diver Joe, if your interested there is a group of divers from Fredericton diving all next week, we have room on Rick Stanly's boat for 7 more divers.. if you and your friend would like to join us. PM if your interested.

Many Thanks Firediver... Look forward to blowing some bubbles with you. I am on Rick's Crew at OceanQuest )

Remind me to show you the AA Machine Gun on the deck of PLM... Most people swim right by it and don't recognize it.

Cheers for now

Joe

always cold there, best is you get yourself a drysuit,as you,ll get colder at greater depths and longer dive durations.

,try to get the Drysuit course for free when purchasing a Drysuit ,i have a Whites Catalyst and i,m a firm believer that this suit is one of the most rugged suits in the marked,i love it!.www.whitescoldwater.com,made in canada.peace

Hi Guys (and gals if any), I am doing a cruise to Halifax and St John last weekend of August. I am sure the ship doesn't have any dive programs set up.
Any suggestions of available shops or operators I could contact. For one or two days, I won't plan on bring my gear (too heavy and no room)
If I have to rent gear, my problem is that although been diving dry for years, never took a course to get a card.
Sounds like you have some nice wrecks (I am alergic to sand (as in beach))

When in Halifax I suggest you check out Torpedo Rays Diving Adventures... You'll find them in the Yellow Pages you can likely get on one of their local charters to one of the wrecks just outside Halifax harbor. If you have time, Lunnenburg is about 2 hrs drive from Halifax and there is a Boat Charter to the Canadain Destroyer Escort "SAGUENAY" there... The ship was sunk as an artifical Reef... She is in tact and at about 80 - 90 feet max and is a pretty good dive... The Drive out is nice as well and you would probably enjoy spending a few hours walking around the town of Lunnenburg and doing the tourist thing. As at Torpeado Rays if they can assist you in making the arrangements to dive there... Here is the Link to the shop...

Good luck and have fun

I'll second Joe's advice, Torpedo's runs good charters, and they're out every weekend. They're scheduled to do the Sonja Maersk and the Zoe on the 29th of Aug..... I haven't been on the Maersk yet.... it's on my list, but the Zoe was nice, about 115' or so if I recall correctly...... I believe the Maersk is in similar depth.
If your schedule doesn't work with that charter..... let me know, boats are cheap up here and we may be able to throw together a trip out. There's usually no trouble getting 5 or 6 people together..... and New Dawn only charges $200 for the boat.... we chartered them last weekend, it's a good day.
