Hi Divers!
I think starting another thread makes it easier for new divers to read it all.

For the new readers: What is Wreckmania?
It's going to happen July 19th to the 23rd.
Place: Deerfield Beach Florida
Wreck specialty certification will be given out by YMCA instructor Walter. We now have 2 rooms left and 3 suites left. Two of the suites have two bathrooms in them, and bedding to get 3 more divers in them to share.
Look here for more updates, and minute by minute coverage of the one the only ...
WRECKMANIA 2002!!!!

Walter

One slight correction, the Wreck certification will be earned by the divers. I don't give anything.

Last night I was in www.scubaclicks.com (The chatroom part)
Jeff the owner, had a contest and I won a dive slate. Pretty cool huh?
A bunch of divers from this board were in there. I won right before Dee came in, but Submariner saw it, so she can vouch for me! Hehehe
I'll be using it during Wreckmania.

TexasMike
February 20th, 2002, 02:16 PM
Bring our own weights or are they supplied?

Natasha
February 20th, 2002, 02:22 PM
Mike:
As far as the 6 Wreckmania dives, weights, tanks, the boat, and Walter are all included. Nitrox will be more and can be paid when Nitrox divers get there. Afternoon dives have not been included and Walter will be getting a price for the tanks, weights and dives shortly.
Since you're flying in, I think weights would be a lot of extra weight you don't need to bring. If you want to shore dive you can always get them from the shop. Right Walter?

So THAT'S what ya'll were talking about! I've entered the contest a couple of times..so far! Did you enter when the little contest thingy poped into the chat? Maybe that's the secret!!!

I had a great time in the chatroom...I don't usually like them very much. We'll have to do that again.

Charlie, that was perfect. Natasha is collecting everything. She'll be keeping what she needs & sending what I need to me. Keeps it simple for everyone.

I will be sending out medical questionaires & waivers to everyone soon.

Natasha, so you get excited about slates? I recently started making my own. They are curved and strap to your arm with velcro straps. They are also considerably more sturdy than most slates. I'm always breaking my slate, so this is important to me. I'll have some in July if anyone's interested.

DSSW,

WWW™

Natasha
February 20th, 2002, 08:03 PM
Walter: Your slates sound great! I wish I had it for my Cozumel trip in 9 more days. Right now I have a big slate that erases with that bottom thing going across the board. I clip it to my BC so I have even more things hanging everywhere! The arm idea is a good one.
Dee: No, that's not how I won. He actually had dive questions and I got one right before anyone else! Can you believe it? It was on the dive tables. He gave an example and you had to know what letter the answer would put you on the tables. I didn't have my tables in front of me, but I took a stab at "G" and was right. Whoo hoo. I'm not as dumb as I look! hehehe

PS. No checks in today's mail to report.

:sunny:

Dee
February 20th, 2002, 10:08 PM
Natasha...I have this 'thing' for slates, don't ask me why! I've probably got at least one of every size ever made or thought of. One of my favorites is a small one to wear on your arm. It isn't curved like Walters but you may be able to find one for your trip. I think Trident makes them and I've seen them in most dive shops.

Natasha

Thanks Dee. I just packed my "big one" and I do love it. It's huge and has that magnetic eraser. Know which one I mean? I used in on my last trip in St Thomas. It's easy to read, it's just a schlep if you know what I mean. Yeah, I got a thing for slates too. If I'm not talking or laughing in my reg, I'm writing it down .. Just can't shut up ..lol
PS somehow I manage to take pics while I'm down there too...and play with the fishies.
Sea you in the chat room tonight?

Today at breakfast my husband said," You know I'd like to get wreck certified." I looked up from my coffee, and said, "Oh really?"
So he's taking off in his busy season and coming down to Florida! Put us both down for Nitrox also, since we're getting up to the "Geezer gas stage".

Sorry I haven't had a chance to get back to you, but business has been very good the last couple of weeks. Anyhow, I confirmed with Natasha this morning so I will be there. I look forward to meeting and diving with each one of you. This sounds like it's going to be a great trip. I am excited. See ya'll there. :tree:Bob

Thanks

But I think that BEACH chairs and not lawn chairs are more in line with our vacation philosophy. For those of you who think that there is no difference, I beg to differ. Walter and I are teaming up to bring you, the discerning dive enthusiast, the low down on the differences between Lawn, Beach, and camping chairs. Until the comparison hits the ether net, just make sure you only specify and buy Beach certified chairs.

As long as we are discussing the SRD (Sit Right Down) philosophy, we may as well discuss the various beach rated options. First... no danglies, please secure all beer and other drinks securely in their beverage holder. Each Chair should have several D-Rings, one of which should be dedicated for your Beach Reel. Beach Reels are esssential to negotiate back to your chair in case of an OOB (Out Of Beer) situation. They will also help us recover you if you succumb to a CNS hit from too much beer. Mike, do you have anything to add here?

Bob
February 23rd, 2002, 02:35 PM
Yo Doc,
I gave up on beach chairs after having both knees scoped. Too hard for me to get out of! I'll stay with my camp chair, thank you. :tree: Bob

I'm with you, Bob :thumb: Any sitting apparatus the encourages your butt to be lower than your knees should be banned by the Florida Beach and Diving Society members. (FBDS)

I would think camp and lawn chairs to be more qualified for the SRD philosophy than beach chairs. With a beach chair, the appropriate method of disembarcation is Roll Out and Wobble Upright (ROWU). Whereas the camp/lawn chair method is the true Stand Right Up (SRU) philosophy, which is the sister philosphy to SRD.

TexasMike
February 23rd, 2002, 02:51 PM
Only that you and your beach buddy should utilize the same model of chair so that if you happen to have a chair failure, you can climb into your buddies as a back-up.

And one other bit of necessary equipment was the powered megaphone so you can catcall at the beach hotties (just like Adam and Jimmie on The Man Show). Or yell orders to the passing beer man.

TexasMike
February 23rd, 2002, 03:32 PM
Oh, and we do need to inform our group that if you see a line running up from the surf attached to a small frame with a bell on it...that's just Pete and me after we decided to get a change of venue and moved our chairs underwater so we can look up and watch the other swimmers.

If the bell rings, that means we ran out of beer and someone needs to bring us another cold one. One ring means a Coors Light for Pete (or what ever he drinks). Two is a Shiner or Guiness for Mike. And a sustained ringing means "Forget the beer, bring nachos"

I can tell that this is going to be a lot of fun. I think this scuba board is and will make a difference to scuba divers everywhere.

On a serious note, what do I need for a reel? I don't think I will ever get into serious wreck diving, with that in mind what would you suggest???? anyone!!

Walter
February 23rd, 2002, 05:15 PM
Charlie,

Features a reel needs are: a handle, a sprocket which turns easily, a method of locking the reel so it does not turn, a method of securing the reel and a method of cliping the line off quickly. None of the clips should be suicide clips. A suicide clip is a clip that will passively clip to a line (meaning without your assistance). A reel is a very simple device.

How funny! You and I are in complete agreement on this one! After sitting back and reading the post over the last few days, I have come to one conclusion. If the BS is as thick on the trip as it is here, we are all going to leave with a bad case of sore ribs from laughing our tanks off. Looks like a good sence of humor is going to be mandatory. This is going to be a laughfest.

Mike, how do you waterproof natchos?? I hate them soggy. If I bring Amstel and a chair can I have 3 rings???? I bet we could have some fun with a tickle stick as the swimmers go over.

Gotcha NetDoc, I'll bring a couple of beach chairs for you and Mike. They were lawn chairs, But I had to saw the legs off and sell them for Scrap so I could buy my dive reel.
Herman, For waterproofing the nachos, Just spray'em down with WD-40 or wrap in duct tape.
Bob, Thought I lost my roomy when I didnt hear from ya, Glad ya back. And I'll have the F150 with me so we could put about 8 in the back. Someone bring a extra roll of duct tape. They have seat belt laws down there.

Pete and Mike can't upgrade because I signed up to be on that side of the hotel so I could play 'name that diver parody' song through the wall between our rooms.

I am with Herman that a sense of humor is mandatory for this trip. I vote for camping chairs as my chair of choice. I too have had knee surgery and beach chairs are a bit too low. Besides camping chairs fold up so handy and have that carrying strap. Also a beer holder in the arm rest is a plus.

Two rings on the Scubabunny beer bell means Budweiser longnecks. Afterall I am a midwestern girl! Sustained ringing means drop down a bag of Corn Nuts. They are naturally water resistant!

Just thought I'd "weigh in" on the chair question...

All you heavy drinkers with bad knees out there - wouldn't you rather pay a beach bunny (gender of your choosing) to deliver beer to you in your close-to-the-ground-so-you-have-a-shorter-distance-to-fall beach chair, than risk falling out of those tall camp chairs and injuring the other knee every time you get up for a refill?

Can't wait for this trip!

I mainly go river diving here in the cooper. I'm going to start hitting the salt more. And well after the weck cert will probably start hitting some of wreck in NC. I head up there to work every so often and could do some easy that way.
Herman is in the Raliegh area.

Sounds like we need to go ahead and get a keg for down there. I'm not a beer drinker but from the sound of it it may be needed.

But we did get to dive at Baracuda yesterday. Today we are playng on the internet, shopping and bought Spanish Scrabble for later. Cross your fingers for us, that this will pass on through for tomorrow.

If Dave, passes the phone test, and can make those dates, he can be your roomy. If not, I have a Steve here that wants to go and share.
The last room was promised to a Chicago women here that wants to do her OW down there with Walter. If she's still in, which I think she is, she will have the last room.
But DivingGal, I do still have the suites. If we can get a few more people to share a suite with you, the price will be low. Lower even then you'd think. Sound good?

With the numbers we have, I've already moved Plan B into the active slot and moved Plan A into backup in case we have a bunch of cancellations. Actually, it's Plan B with a modification. The modification we can discuss when you return to the states.

Plan A & Plan B.

You all know about Plan A, it's the plan we've discussed. As our ranks grew it caused a problem with Plan A. Even though I'll have 2 assistants with the class, Plan A would cause 1 of 2 problems. 1. exceeding student/teacher ratios. This would be breaking standards and as you've probably guessed, I won't do it. or 2. Having me (and the two assistants) make 4 dives with approximately half the group on dives 1 & 3 and the other half on dives 2 & 4. This would cause problems with the afternoon schedule as well as continued good will with the crew. An additional problem is Natasha will be cooking linch while we are diving. No wreck diving for Natasha.

Plan B solves the problems. Natasha cooks in the morning while half the group does their wreck dives. The other half eats lunch and brings Natasha (along with lunch for two assistants & me) to the boat. We swap AM divers for PM divers and go out for more wreck dives with the folks who prefered to sleep in.

Nothing is carved in stone, but this looks to be the best solution to the scheduling problem.

NetDoc
March 5th, 2002, 12:35 PM
is that these poor, hapless idiots, er assistants will have to dive the wrecks twice with you... Now THATs a tough go :tease:

March 5th, 2002, 01:17 PM
Let me be the first to express a preferrance for the morning dive slot.

It's been my experience that people get more and more "punchy" as a day wears on, and I don't think I could keep up with the "punsters" if I'm stuck on a dive boat at Four in the afternoon with this crowd! (I'll catch up after a nap!)

Besides - if I don't get up in the morning and do something, I'll drive you all crazy, not to mention Lydia! (I can see it now, 20+ years down the tube in one ill-fated dive trip....) No, deffinately have to be in the morning group...

And since I earlier indicated a desire to dive in afternoon as well, does this mean I can be on board then (space allowing for plan "B"-ers")?

I got a story to share. My family was going to a funeral one of our relitives passed and Ms. Mott from next door fried some chicken for us to carry to whom ever house it was. Well that was the best chicken I ever ate in my life, bar none. That chicken didn't last 15 minutes after it arrived. You know how there are good cooks and then there is the all time hall a famers Cookers. Well that chicken put Ms. Mott in that group. I know none of my family felt guilty about the chicken episode because that was the best chicken ever.
And I have to say Aunt Dorthey with those hand made biscuits is deffinatly in there also. Got to love that reciepe she gave me. Flour a little shorten and a dab of salt. Well how much? Just until it feels right. I think that's her way of saying go catch me some bream and I'll cook you some. Biscuits and honey. I need to go I'm getting hungry.

Unfortunately since I was unaware of Plan B, I already booked a 2pm return flight. Jeff and I would need to do morning dives at least on the last day in order to meet the minimum surface interval before flying.

Walter,

I prefer mornings as well, mainly just because I like to get up and go. I suspect that I can get a later flight so I can be flexable in needs be. What impact does this have on non-course diving (what was to be afternoon dives)?

Herman:
Because the classes need to be split up now, the afternoon dives will be shore dives. Unless Walter thinks we can have morning people doing the boat wreck dives again, but that doesn't really make sense for anyone.
I should have told Walter this on the phone, but I can type it now.
Walter it's very unlikely we will have people cancel going on this trip.
So far I have had 0 divers cancel any of the trips they have committed to going on. The word of a diver, is a good one.

Dee
March 5th, 2002, 07:27 PM
Put Beast and I down for mornings. But if everyone wants mornings, we really haven't changed anything, have we?

Because the classes need to be split up now, the afternoon dives will be shore dives.

If the afternoon dives will be shore dives then take me off the afternoon dive list. My knees don't like those walks across loose sand, among other beach diving features, so I don't argue with them! I'll try to find another boat to go out on in the afternoons.

Unless Walter thinks we can have morning people doing the boat wreck dives again, but that doesn't really make sense for anyone.

Why doesn't that make sense? I haven't seen a wreck yet that I don't want to dive over and over. Depth and bottom times can be planned for and adjusted.

I can see Walter not wanting to double teach the class but that shouldn't effect divers either finished with the class dive or not in the class at all.

Walter
March 5th, 2002, 08:23 PM
I really don't think AM vs PM will an issue, especially if people want to dive morning and afternoon. At least three of us will already be diving each site twice. On nitrox, we can safely make these dives. We'll probably have morning dives be fun dives for those who are diving in the afternoon and put them to work in the afternoon. I do not expect scheduling to be more than a minor headache. As far as cancellations - I don't expect any either, but I do like to consider possibilities. I certainly do not want anyone to cancel. Sometimes things come up beyond a diver's control. A dear friend might schedule a wedding during Wreckmania. Stranger things have happened. Everyone is welcome on all scheduled trips, but shore dives are also available for those interested.

To the tune "Animaniacs"

We're Wreck-a-maniacs!
Yes, Wreck-a-maniacs!
When we dive into the blue,
Its like a total zoo!
What more could you ask!

It really isn't fair,
When we steal your underwear!
We'll tie it to a flagpole,
And run that sucker up!
We hope that you'll be there!

We are crazier than most,
Natasha is our host!
Our teacher's name is Walt,
He's picky to a fault,
He can really be verbose!

We're Wreck-a-maniacs!
Yes, Wreck-a-maniacs!
We can be a little dippy,
'Specially when we're tipsy!
We're Wreack-a-mani...
Really, really zany...
(This song is kinda lamey)
Wreck-a-maniaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacs!!!

To the tune of "The Beverly Hillbillies"

Here's a little story,
'Bout Natasha and Walt.
Put a class together,
Divin' wrecks deep in the salt!
They weren't very funny,
'Cause they had this writer's block,
So they called Texas Mike,
And his cousin NetDoc...
(spoken)
Wreckmanics they is,
A Texas Crude, and a Florida Cracker!

Well Tex went to work,
trying to manufacture fun.
And NetDoc said,
"We've only just begun!"
Singing songs and making jokes,
Is the way it ought to be,
So, Wreckmania,
Will will have tons of lunacy...
(spoken)
Silly, silly songs... and them impractical type jokes.

One more thing,
You'll get to meet MB!
Some people say,
He's funnier than me.
It's not that I'm sayin'
That he's ugly, can't you see,
But he does an imitation,
Of a mangy manatee.
(spoken)
Slow movin ya know, with yaller gloves!

My number #1 favorite dive of my life ..yes, my life ..was the new wreck down there, the C-53.

They are commonly called doo-rags. The name springs from their usefulness to the bikers who made them famous....protect your head (especially if you are hair deficient) from the sun, a rag to be used for various uses, a statement of personality and recognition among their peers. You could *do* lot of things with it.

It snugly fits the shape of your head and ties to fit in the back. The tail in the back protectes the back of your neck from sunburn. I've tweeked the design to make them fit lower on the forehead and the band to tie snugger so that when you wear it while diving, no bubbles get underneath. This way you don't have to worry about taking it on and off to dive and possibly losing it.

I've been making them for Beast for over 30 years, evolving from his bikers days to his diver days. A friend has always called them Dee-rags instead of doo-rags because of my nickname so when I started selling them to divers, the name stuck.

If you click on Dee-Rags under my signature, you'll see my website. Have patience for the loading and be kind...I'm an HTML idiot!

Dee's "Dee Rags" are also great for the ladies with long hair. I have one that I find myself using all the time to keep my hair out of my face or just for those "bad hair days".

I just wanted to share with you guys the most retarded thing that I have done in a very long time: On my commute home from work today (after one too many Cabernets), I fell asleep on my bus and woke up when the bus driver was trying to shake me awake. I had absolutely no clue where I was (I moved recently) and so couldn't even figure out how to get home. Eventually, the bus driver had to retrace the bus route until I figured out where I live. :shaking:

I think I should wear a Stupid Sign for a while.

It's good to know NY bus drivers are good, responsible people. Glad he/she got you home safely.
We'll have to watch what we pour you down in Florida. Don't want you to fall asleep in the room, and miss the dives!
PS I only wish I could fall sleep that easily. Maybe I don't drink enough? Hehehehe

You're not the 1st one to pull that stunt. While in the Marine Corps I was stationed in Japan and used to ride the high speed train(110+mph) from Iwakuni to Hiroshima( 2hr ride) every Sat. to do the town there. Never failed, drink too much and fall asleep on the train. Could have ended up in Tokyo (7hr. up the way) but without fail some kind soul would always wake me in time to get off the train. God has special angels to look after some of us who at times are just not capable to do it ourselves. Travel safe and keep shining! See you in Florida.

I was down in Yokuska for a couple of months and wanted to make a Hard Rock Cafe run in the repungie district of Tokyo. Couple of hours not a problem. Got there without to much trouble. But coming back. You know those signs above the door that has the color train you ride. Well I knew what line I was on but had no clue where at on that line. Missed the stop and had a nice walk back. Didn't trust the trains after that.
Neet thing about Tokyo, Finding a bar called Charleston. It was run by some New Zealand chaps. I blame missing the stop on them.

Okay since everyone is sharing their train stories. When I was in Northern Italy in the Air Force, a girlfriend and I got leave over Labor Day Weekend and decided to go to Rome on the overnight train. We had never gotten on a sleeper train before so we decided that we should have a couple bottles of wine each so we would be able to sleep!

Italian wine varies greatly as to the % of alcohol by volume because it isn't regulated. We must have gotten some really strong stuff because we were in a six passenger sleeper car and when we went to sleep we were the only two. When the conductor came around to tell us it was our stop 7 hours later and wake us up, 4 other people had joined us on the other bunks and we didn't even hear them come in!

I truly believe that we could have been robbed of all our money and luggage and slept right through it!

So SunshineFish, don't feel bad. Atleast you were in a country where you could communicated with the bus driver. If we got lost in Italy we had to use a unique brand of sign language and what I remembered from College Spanish to get us by!

KC, Since you were in Italy, What is that stuff they make over there with the lemons. It taste like ever clear with lemon juice. It took a week for my eyes to stop seeing double. I thought I was suffering from alcohol poisioning after that trip. No more Italian home brew for this Rat.

And here all this time I thought you were brewing moonshine in that Redneck Live-aboard of yours.

Swamp Rat,

I think you mean Grapa. It comes in many flavors. My personal experience with the stuff was a blueberry flavor but same response. We had been at Aviano AFB about a week and we went downtown into the villiage for dinner. The waitress asked us if we wanted a shot of Grapa to help with digestion. We were all game so we took a shot. By the time we got back to the gate, I couldn't feel my ears or nose. It only got worse from there. I spent the night sleeping face down on a picnic table with my face hanging off the end over a 55 gallon trash barrel.

I swore off Grapa after that. I knew some guys who brought bottles of it back to the states as gifts for friends and family. You have to worry about someone who thinks that is a gift!

Wreckaminacs with apologies to Rhymin' Simon, and all those who love his "Kodachrome"

When I think back on all the crap,
I learned from Walter...
It's wonder that -I-
Can dive at all!
And though my lack of penetration
hasn't hurt me none!
I can still do my deco,
On a wall!!!

Wrecka-maaaaaaaaniacs
We're diving deep in the ocean!
A dozen bo-o-dies in motion!
Penetrating wrecks
that are thirty meters deep, Oh yeah!

Dee's got her Oly-y-ympus camera
Wishin' you a-a-all was down there,
Tieing off lines,
and then singing these parodies...

If you took all the wrecks I knew,
'fore I met Walter.
And put them all together for one dive!
You know I never was that safe,
Till I learned this from Walter...
Always take a line when you go inside!

Wrecka-maaaaaaaaniacs
We're diving deep in the ocean!
A dozen bo-o-dies in perfect motion!
Penetrating wrecks
that are thirty meters deep, Oh yeah!

Dee's got her Oly-y-ympus camera
Wishin' you a-a-all was down there,
Tieing off lines,
and then singing these parodies...

We sure do need a gee-tar picker on this trip! Or maybe a Kareoke machine with the music from all your parodies. Yea...we could all sing along!

:( I have some sad news for Sunshinefish, I will not be making the wreckmania trip and she now needs a room mate. I hope that there is another female that is interested in this spot. I am very sorry to cancel, but after giving this a lot of thought I do not feel I am or will be ready for these dives. In comparison with many going I am very, very beginner and not quite as technical oriented as some either. I am working on the experience and plan to do alot of diving with my dive shop on several trips that they make. I am going this coming Thurs, with them to do a liveaboard in the Bahamas. I will be going to WPB in May and to Cozumel with them in place of Wreckmania. I also, will go back to WPB with them for Labor Day weekend. Hopefully another liveaboard in the fall. Since Dema is in October they may not schedule one. Again, I am sorry to change my mind on this as most everyone sounds like alot of fun. It is just the diving part seems to be more than I am ready for. I will keep everyone posted on my trips and hopefully gained experiences. ;-(

Just (oh about 5 hours ago) got back from Florida - spent a day with NetDoc, and a few with Walter. Yeehaw -- I'll tell you these guys are a hoot in person!

Walter and I travelled down to the site of Wreckmania, and you guys are in for a treat. The hotel is a small family run style place, right along side the beach. Convenient walking distance to lots of places to eat, and just a mile down the road from the charter that will be used. Walter and I visited a couple of reefs one day, and then some of the wrecks you'll be visiting the next. You will enjoy yourselves -- not only with the charter, but with the wrecks.

I'll be posting a "My Florida Adventure" as soon as I wake up a bit more.
