Though I have enjoyed beach diving with a bunch of the folks on this board, I am not a huge fan of beach diving. The 4 evil "S"es of beach diving (Stairs, Sand, Surf and Surface Swim).

I always wondered why we never tried to informally organize a boat dive every so often. Just agree on a date when a good boat has an "open boat" date and then we can all book ourselves on it. There are so many good people on this board, a boat dive would be fun with a bunch of us on it.

Throw out your favorite socal boat and I will tally up the results, find us a date next month and if you want to go, you just call up the boat and sign up and then post up on the board that you will be there.

My vote would be the Pacific Star out of Redondo on Sept 18. They charge $98 for 3 tank Catalina trips, AWESOME food and air included. Parking is $2. They will even carry your gear from your car to the boat and back, if you want.

Whaddya say?

If you want to come down here, we rent a boat, 4 people, two tank dive, $50.oo per person (Yukon, Ruby E, Kelp Beds....)

You say that like it is a bad thing.

I love boat diving, but my wallet and wife do not.

Now about those 4 S’s.

Stairs - good aerobic work out with an ocean view, an don't forget the bikini's too  . (of course on many of my dives that ain’t no stinking stairs, just goat trail and cliff. :icon10: )
Sand – Well, you may have a point there.
Surf – Not a problem. Just a matter of timing.
Surface Swim – relaxing on your back, good conversation and a little flutter kick while you swim out. Good cardio workout. Beats the stair master or tread mill in a gym any time.

There are worse things like the 4W’s
Waist line, Work, wallet and wait for a spot on a boat to open up.
Why throw money away at a health club when you can have all that exercise and a dive for only the cost of an air fill.

In short, beach diving beats a gym membership and has lots of health benefits. Shore diving offers flexible schedules and if the vis is bad, your not out anything but a little time, and air.

But, seriously, I do enjoy the occasional boat dive.

I like the idea of renting a boat and going out on your own! If you plan that - let me know.

I'm in for this weekend, we just need two more people.........I've got a boat flag from the last boat dive we did and we learned some tricks to make the exit and boarding easy.

This weekend my mother is visiting - so I can't do it. Sorry

To me the best of both worlds is the high speed ferry to Catalina and diving the Casino. Almost half the price of a boat (well, kinda almost, considering parking and stuff), half the travel time, no stairs to climb, no parking problems, great facilities (some beaches don't even have restrooms, not to mention food), for a small fee you can have someone haul your gear, and afterwards you can take a short walk into Avalon and relax, have lunch, etc.

Although I still have this sense that diving the Casino is kind of like fishing in a lake stocked with fish.

Are the high speed boats helpful with your gear? I have heard that some of the Catalina boats were charging more for SCUBA gear and some not allowing tanks or weights.
