Mt. Storm vis and temp?

I was there maybe 2 months ago. The lake never really changes alot. The low to mid 80's is a common temp. for this time of year and the vis 10' - 15' is about the norm.

Have you ever been there? Are you from the area?

I'd like to know everything I can about Mt. Storm. How far to a motel, a restaurant what kind of winds are at the lake, fish.. and so on..

I wanna dive there and want to know what to expect and what to bring..

Temp upper 80's, some said 90.
GPS said the altitude was 3430 feet.
Vis above 40 feet maybe 15 feet without divers around, dropped to 2-3 feet at 100 feet. Small thermocline around 94 feet....dropped to mid 80's!

Bottom REALLY silty down deep...touch it and it is instant zero vis.

Starting getting dark at 40 feet, was really dark at 100 feet.

Platforms at 25 feet (2), 50 feet, and 90 feet.
Ropes connecting all platforms.

To keep busy on 7 dives, my buddy and I mapped everything and ran marked lines for distances.

Joe Dubois from Scubaventures arrived Sunday morning with his big red truck, but air fills are only available if you prepay because he can't sell anything on the state property. He is at 1-800-580-DIVE.

This was my third trip to Mt Storm; stayed at the Mountaineer Motel, ate at Evelyn's Stained Glass Restaurant. The restaurant was great, the motel was convenient.

Does the vis change with all the rains we have been getting?

I was told temp varies with power CO's output. Any way to tell if their burners are running at full? They said if power is off water is cold?

If power is on and water warm can you get by with a shorty or do you need a full suit?

Is there bathroom or changing facility their?

On weekends or weekdays is it hard to pair up with a buddy if alone?

We usually stay in Davis. Used to be a Best Western. The restaurant there is good, too. It's about 20 minutes from the lake. As far as camping, you cannot camp at the lake. It's on state property. There is a campground near the lake, but they are onlly open between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The only fish I have seen there are channel cats. I have been there in early May and early November. Each time the water was between 63 and 66 degrees. I was told that the power plant was only using one turbine and the water was cooler than if the plant was running at full capacity. Also, there is no air available at Mt. Storm. You need plenty of tanks or a portable compressor designed for air fills. Visibility drops quickly as you descend because of the constant turnover of the water keeping silt moving in the water. Keep a flashlight handy. It is a good dive and definitely a great experience. Go online and get a map of the lake. It isn't a good map, but it will tell you where there are some things to see and where the platforms are. Try a google search for Mt. Storm Lake in WV. I have a timeshare that I can trade for in Davis... right now the only time I can get off is the week before Thanksgiving..... and I'll probably be solo, So... Anyone areound there want to go diving? I would need a buddy..... Anyone a bit further than local... It's a 2 Bedroom unit.... Sleeps 6 (though the extra 2 I think are on a pull out couch). I'd be willing to share..... Anything else to do in the area at this time of year? I would guess that the whitewater rafting would be closed up (and too cold!) for the season

Was at Mt storm this weekend. Water war at 83 degrees, leaves beautiful with fall colors and water visibility fair. (guess it is good vis for storm?) Parking lot was empty only 2 other divers and no boaters to speak of. Perfect solitude! Lots of fish - cats and some BG. Sorry I did not bring fishfood will add it to my gear list. Both smokestacks were running at power plant so water looks good for the near term if you like it hot.

OK, so the temp will look fine..... any takers to buddy up with the week before thanksgiving? Even got an extra bedroom.... I just want to make sure that if I go for the week, I'm gonna find someone else to dive with! or at least some other stuff to do in the area at this time of year.... Hate to end up spending a week sitting around by myself drinking.....
