Hello, everybody:

I just returned from a business trip to San Diego. While I was there, I learned that my local counsel is a diver who is just getting back into diving after a couple of years staying dry.

We are trying to hook up for some more dives in or around the end of November.

I was hoping that you might be able to share information on the following:

1. Exposure protection - I'm guessing that my dry suit would not be out of place? My other alternative is a 3mm full wetsuit.

2. Shops - Any recommendations where I can rent nitrox tanks? I prefer LP steels and would love to find someplace that rents double 104's or 130's.

3. Operators - Who would you recommend? I'm looking for a boat used to dealing with experienced divers. In particular, I'd like a reasonably sized boat, a good brief from the crew, help when I ask, but without hand holding or a requirement that I follow the guided tour. Price is not an issue. Diving off a cattle boat is a huge issue. In addition, while I enjoy discussing diving and diving equipment, I'm not interested in debating DIR or hearing that I need to wear a snorkel in order to dive.

4. Sites. My potential buddy informs me that there are a few wrecks within recreational limits. I'd love to dive those if they can be reached in the one day that I'll have to dive. Alternatively, what would you recommend?

Thanks for your information.

Do the drysuit, configured to handle mid 60's water temp...(as I recall...)

The Yukon and Ruby E are wrecks that were intentionally sunk in 2000 and 1989 respectively....

see

http://www.loisann.com/dive_sites.html#wrecks

The wrecks are only a mile or two off shore. Easily done in a a handful of hours to both, including a third tank to the kelp.

for details on the dive charter and the wrecks...

Expect 85 to 100 ft depths.

Woody on the Lois Ann is tech friendly and knows how to run a boat. There are no "guided tours" in San Diego unless you rent a DM. All boats have "on board" divemasters. Dive Pro and Dive Locker rent nitrox but I am not sure what tanks they are using. I am not sure there IS anyone that rents doubles here. November on the Yukon will be closer to 50 than 60 so plan accordingly. She is a great penatration dive for those so inclined.

Come on down, the waters fine!!!

The 3mm will be fine for walking around the streets in November, but I wouldn't take it in the water. I'd suggest you do the dry suit.

Thanks for the information.

The operation you pointed me towards looks like exactly what I'm looking for. And I'll definitely take your advice on the drysuit.

Once again, thanks.

I highly recommend Blue Escape charters (blueescape.com). They are absolutely awesome. Professional on all levels and extremely knowledgable on the best sites in SD including a lot of the "lesser known" sites. Nitrox of course.

Talk about a cattle boat, but so is most on the weekends, best to dive during the week.
