Consider participating in the Coastal Clean-Up on September 18th in Redondo Beach with me and other SoCal divers.

Dive N Surf is coordinating the underwater cleanup at Redondo Pier and it's free to participate. You can get a shirt for $10 if you want a suvenier of your good deed. I'm pasting part of an email with info on the event. Call DnS @ 310-376-9922 to take part. Divevets.com has more info as well.

"This is the diver’s opportunity to give something back to the environment. It is one day a year that the pier is closed down for fishing for a short time and we enter the water to clean up what has been tossed into the ocean over the last year from the Redondo Pier. It is very important that we support this effort. Every year there is less and less trash that we pick up. It will never be completely clean but our efforts go a long way towards that goal. We normally have a couple dozen divers who meet early on the Saturday morning for this one clean-up dive. We enter the water near the pier, if conditions allow we go under the pier, pick up the junk, bring it to the beach and volunteers take it from there. Last year this event brought 25 or 30 tons of garbage out of the water worldwide. Lets support this event. It's free. It is a Top-of-the-Bottom (TOB) event, if it will be your first beach TOB event you need 9 more to receive the TOB patch. Call Linda or John to sign-up for this event. I believe T-shirts specially made for this event are available for $10. After the clean-up, DNS is sponsoring the annual Splash Party at DNS. Tons of prizes are usually available and admission is free to dive team members."

Sorry, don't know. Maybe a websearch will tell you something. Otherwise, come on up and help clean up with us...same ocean. :thinkingo

Heal the bay sponsors it. San Diego Beaches (and Laguna) are not part of Santa Monica Bay.

Heal The Bay

Beach Sites from the site (doesn't specify what beach cleanup has a group diving). Usually different shops bring people to different beaches.

I hear it is alot of fun as you can dive around the peirs at Santa Monica and Redondo. Some people find neat stuff, and valuables (jewelry, etc) too. I think a friend of mine found a decent skateboard under the Redondo pier.

Hooray "Dive N Surf"
After reading this I went in today for the first time (just moved here) and it was a great shop but they were busy and the sign up sheets were on the computer display case and just labelled A, B, C or D for different events.

Way too confusing for me to tell the "Lobster Monster" event from the "Clean Up", etc and didn't see that any sheets had a title. Staff were all preoccupied with customers so I left and hadn't signed up. I'll try again another day, but Thank you for supporting it.

I'd be interested in participating as a diver, but all the links I've followed seem to indicate that the volunteering is for on-shore clean-up. Who should I talk to to DIVE?

Hi Chud,

Just call Dive N' Surf in Redondo to put your name on the list. It's free unless you want a Tshirt ($10). It should be fun considering Redondo Pier is usually off limits for diving.

I heard you and Scott had a fun dive last week. Hope to see you out sometime.

Roland

Saturday I saw a big military fatigue colored bag dropped off a boat out in the kelp off the La Jolla cove. Sadly I couldn't pick it up since I had no bag to carry it (they don't let you take in a game bag), but whenever I see trash I try to pick it up. Perhaps they need to have some "underwater" cleanup events like casino point. I have seen many used lobster traps that need to be removed at many dive spots. These are good issues divers would be very willing to help out on. Sadly the trash flows out to sea and down to the dive sites, so I guess it is our concern.

Perhaps your local dive club could get a dive site cleanup going. We could all dive and pick up trash underwater! Sounds like fun!!

Sean

Like Sean I have seen trash and picked up what I can fit in my BC pockets. But the old lobster traps are somewhat cool since they form artificial reefs. Are they a hazard for other fish or lobster to get trapped in? Just wondering.
