This will be my first year hunting Bugs but I have No idea where to start so,

1-Permits...what do you need? fishing, Hunting....both?
2-where....never mind you won't tell me anyway
3-how? I've made a few "test" catches and been fairly succesfull but there must be a "better" way?
4- *Most Important* is it worth the time and money?

#1 Buy a fishing license with an "ocean" stamp on it. Just under $40/year

#2 Anyplace there is saltwater but you will have the most luck if
a) There are rocky hiding spots
b) There are not loots of other divers

3# I don't know, if you have been able to grab a few you are doing fine

#4 Yes, go to a "Ranch 99" supermarket. They have the best prices on
live lobster. When you figure the cost of scuba equipment, license,
and everrythng else it's cheapr to just buy them
You do it because you like the sport. If you see lobster hunting as
a "hassel" don't bother

Yep, what he just said.

Lobster is the most expensive free meal.

Hey Sam can I add to your post ?

I've got a couple newbie bug hunting ?'s

#1 Can you also spear/fish with a fishing license/ocean enhancement sticker ?

#2 Is it true bugs like it when there's no moon ?

#3 What time is best to go ?
a. early sunset
b. middle of the night
c. early dawn
d. high/low tide

#4 I heard (BBS Myth ?) that they don't react to red lites.

#5 Also heard they stay in shallow water early in the season and deeper water later in the season ?

Just one observation I made last year during my first season of bug hunting. When I found Garibaldi and Sheepshead in the same spot that's were the bugs seemed to be. I could follow a Garibaldi to his hole and he'd have co. Bugs!
And where there was one or more there were more around the general area.
I dive mainly beaches from Malibu - Ventura .

#6 Anyone else have the same experience ?

Didn't mean to hi jack your thread Sam. Especially since I won't be back in the game til x-mas time. I/we (newbies) need any advantage we can get.

Sea ya LATER , Jeff

Yep
54 dives and counting, 10 bug hunting last year.

My first bug was about 8 to 10 lbs.
