I know there is shore diving off Venice (public beach or this "new" place i am hearing about without the recent sewage  ) and the odd patchy reef off Bradenton (sugar barge, third pier, spanish rocks), but i was wondering if there was anything between?

My mum, granny and friend are coming over to stay at the end of next month in a place on Lido Key, just south of Longboat Key, and i was wondering if anyone had jumped in and gone out to see if there was anything out there and if so, whereabouts? Are there just patchy reefs up and down the gulf coast or are there likely to be teeth around there too. Looking for something to do whilst my mum et al sunbathe (i cant sit/lie still like that all day), so i thought i would try to burn off some air. Should i just drag them down or up to a site i know or just get out there and see what is around? Anyone feeling the need to get wet around 10/30-31 and 11/4-5 weekends (although Becky is likely to be free the latter weekend as well)?

I see nothing in the books about that area for shore diving, only offshore stuff. I can leave them for an hour or two to shore dive, but not a half day to get on a boat.
