Police investigate death of diver

A male diver was found floating face down near the beach early Sunday afternoon, authorities said. Deputies are still investigating his death.

The man was diving with a group near 700 Gulf Drive N., according to a Manatee County Sheriff's Office news release.

He complained to others in his group he was having problems with his regulator and was heading back to shore, the report stated. Several minutes later, he was found floating about 10 feet away from shore.

He was pulled ashore and given CPR, the release stated.

Capt. Larry Leinhauser, spokesman for Manatee Emergency Medical Services, said Sunday the man suffered an apparent heart attack.

The man taken to Blake Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the release stated.

Deputies did not release the man's name since they had not notified his family of his death, the report said.

Death investigation of drowning victim

BRADENTON, Florida [NMT] -- The Manatee County Sheriff's Office said a man apparently drowned yesterday around 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon off the 700 block of Gulf Drive North, in Bradenton Beach.

A report from MSO said the victim, a 55-year-old White male, who was not named pending notification of next of kin, was diving in a group approximately 100 yards off shore.

The man told one of the divers he was having problems with his breathing regulator and was heading to shore.

Several minutes later, the man was found floating face down, approximately 10 feet from shore.

He was pulled ashore and CPR was started.

The man was transported to Blake Hospital by EMS, where he was pronounced dead.

The Sheriff's Office is continuing an investigation.

Condolences to the family, it's so sad to hear these kind of stories. Never leave your buddy, end of story.

Buddy - by conjecture from the story:

"Looks" like he went back solo. Although knowing that area fairly well, its only about 15ft deep and gets shallow really quickly from the sites around there. If it is the site i think it is, he could have surfaced with minimal chance of getting buzzed by a jetski and surface swam back in as it is quieter for boat traffic around there.

Sorry for his family.

A co worker of the victim told me the buddy went back down and joined the group
