when to get a Reel?

I use a ScubaPro 70 Pneumatic with the string leader. At what point would I need a Reel. Most of my fishing is done on a reef.
Are the Reels used in the deeper waters? or for big fish? or big GUNS? or just for an added tool for help with any size fish or gun?
 
Reels are used primarily when freediving allowing the shooter to get back to the surface to fight the fish if a floatline is not used. Some folks use them when lineshafting on scuba but it's not a common practice.
