Hi all,

Are there any good wrecks in Southern California, or at least nearby that are of any interest? Anywhere from LA south is what I would be referring to. Any depth, by the way. (within reason!)

Thanks,
Mike

Hi

I dove all around southern California before moving to Texas.
The wreck they put down a couple years ago outside of
San Diego I heard is excellent. It might be the one listed
in the other post (Yukon), I am not sure. Also there's a wreck
off Casino point in about 90ft of water in Catalina. It's nothing
great but it's a wreck. Hope this helps.

I went out to check out some wrecks this weekend with the CA Wreck Divers just past the breakwaters of San Pedro (makes sense; boats sink where there is boat traffic!) For places like this, I believe that u have to get prior permission to dive, as it is not a dive-site per se. These were in about 90' of water so many divers did not have anything more than an AL80 (although there were those qualified to use mixed gases, etc.) It was a fascinating day, & I can't wait for their next activity.

90% of my dives are on the wrecks near San Pedro. My favorites are the Caissons in 105-160 feet(there are supposedly four, although I've only found two), Ace One 125 feet, Moody 145 feet, Olympic II 98 feet, Palawan 130 feet and many small wrecks. Some of the strange sites include a mobile crane with tires still full of air in 55 feet. What it's doing in the ocean is anyone's guess. My buddies and I have been using a mapping program to find more wrecks and we have over 100 that we haven't dived yet, including a particular U-boat. :)

Share the GPS on the U-Boat?

Thought I would ask...

I feel the need to stem a few rumors going around the SoCal dive community. My friends and I have not found the UB88, yet. It is a major goal of mine, but only a single piece of the goal we have set. We hope to one day know the location of every wreck in the San Pedro Channel. When I first got certified in the 80s I met several divers and fishermen who had looked for the sub for close to forty years. Some had erroneously claimed to know the location, but the team that found it last August proved them wrong. Kendall, we're not trying to step on anyone's toes here. We are simply trying to find elusive wrecks, of which the UB88 is one. Imagine if noone had followed Columbus. For many diver, the Andrea Doria is the Holy Grail. Some have been disappointed when that goal was attained. See Fred for more. :) For me, the UB88 has always been the brass ring of diving, without the brass, of course.
None of the guys involved in our search own a speargun or carry tools underwater with them. We would like nothing more than to share in the awe of visiting an elusive target filled with more life than any other known site in California. I believe we are on the right track to finding this and other wrecks. My ultimate goal is to dive it, share it, and see to it that it remains a pristine dive site, even if it is "just an artificially sunk boat".
