I've searched a this forum and visted a few manufacturers sites wo no avail so here is the question....

On dive computers is the download interface optical, like on some PDAs? It seems that would avoid a vulnerable electrical port and beign to justify the download kit cost. And if it's not universal (what the heck is!) who produces what?

Nope and no standard either. Each brand has their own and I would be surprised if some brands make different interfaces for different models.

As it turns out, on a lot of computers the same electrical contacts for the download interfaces are how the computer detects being underwater to automatically turn itself on (past a certain depth).

There are computers that don't have download interfaces, if thats what you were asking. The Suunto Gekko is one I can think of offhand.
