Location
Just east of Tucson, AZ
I got to thinking maybe since there a more then a few divers here in this "desert" area maybe we could try and get together some weekend for dinner or something? Is anyone interested? I live in Benson, 40 miles south east of Tucson, I'd be up to a meeting in Tucson or even Phoenix if we could get the timing and place put together. Maybe once we see who wants to do it we can balance the meeting place and get someone there to find a place. What do you think? Roger

Roger,

I'm a member of the Arizona Scuba club, our leader David is responsible for this forum. We're a group of 100 or so divers who meet to talk diving and make trips - locally, to Mexico/California and internationally. The intent behind the club is to meet other divers and dive. We purposely don't affiliate ourselves with any dive store locally but welcome them all equally to provide monthly updates on their actiivities.

If you want to drive to Phoenix, we meet informally every 2nd Wednesday for an informal social gathering. In fact the meeting is this Wednesday from 5:45-8:30 at the Westside Grille at 24th St. and Camelback. Which is in east-central Phoenix. Lately it seems like about 15-20 people are showing up, but we just standardized the meeting time/location last month so maybe there'll be more.

I realize it's a long drive for you - my sister lives in Corona de Tucson - so maybe you'd like to become involved in the group through our Yahoo forum instead. Membership is free: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/azscuba/

Closer to your area there's an active group of divers from Raytheon. We share info with them. Anyone can become a member of their group. They're called R-Divers, http://www.vancesystems.com/scuba/ or pm danielvance on this board for details.

Here's some other info on other diveclubs in the Phoenix area:

Ocean Planet in Tempe has a dive club. They have a 2nd Friday of every month BBQ-Pool Party. http://www.oceanplanetscuba.com/club.htm.

Scuba Sciences in Phoenix also has a diveclub. They meet monthly near their NW Phoenix store: http://www.scubasciences.com/club_meetings.htm

regards,

Steve

There is also the Desert Dolphins Dive Club. (Tucson based)

http://www.desertdolphins.com

R-Team is a Ratheon club, but is open to all divers. I am a member and have dove with them and had a great time.

Those AZSCUBA people up in Phoenix are... Well, I am the founder so I am biased.

Getting on our Yahoo list will get you some locally planned dive trips and local event chatter.

I do not think it would be worth the drive from Tucson to Phoenix just to have a few drinks and talk diving. If you have reason to be in the area, feel free to join us. I personally would not drive to Tucson from Phoenix specifically just to attend R-team or Desert Dolphins meetings.

I'm moving to the Tempe area and looking for a fun active SCUBA club to join.
Can you update me on the current club and meeting information? I tried to look up the Tempe Dive Club information you listed below in 2005 but it looks like it is out of date and I am trying to find the current club meetings and activities in the Tempe, AZ area.
Thanks and I look forward to hearing more.

AZScuba disbanded a few years ago. Ocean Planet and Scuba Sciences both shut down as well.

Here's a list of current clubs I'm aware of - IDK how active any of these are except for Academy of Scuba - they used to get a pretty good crowd.
I haven't been to any club meetings in at least several years though. From Tempe it wouldn't be too far - just up the 101.
Scuba Pros is on the westside so that's more of a trek. It's a (mine) SSI focused shop but I don't attend the meetings. I don't know Scubashop at all.

Academy of Scuba Diver Socials and Scuba Meet and Greets
Scuba Club - The Scuba Shop
Club Meetings - Scuba Professionals of Arizona, Phoenix, Peoria, AZ
Scuba Girls by Scuba Professionals of Arizona

Ask over on Arizona Scuba also. At times they do a Thursday Night dive at Lake Pleasant. It's not always the most active forum.
