Just tried my new Riffe this weekend. I was wondering up to this point what they meant by "silent". Now I know. The gun I used a few years back had metal wires on the bands that hooked into notches on the shaft with a metal guide at the end of the gun to hold the shaft in place while swimming. The Riffe uses nylon cord to connect the bands to the shaft and the shaft string wraps over the tip of the spear to hold it in place. The result is no metal on metal "PING" when I pull the trigger, the fish don't hear a thing and don't get that split second jump causing a miss. The ones I shot pretty much didn't flinch until they were hit.
