Is there any place in the world where you can dive with sharks unprotected? I checked out those cage diving charters and thats really cool but a lot of places let you feed sharks out of the cage also right? or wrong?

Go to Morehead City North Carolina and dive the Papoose. I'm a bit biased but I'd do it with Olympus Diving, call and let them explain the details 252-726-9432. You'll love this dive. This is a natural environment and you don't feed the sharks, you just swim with them.

Probably depends on what type of sharks you are talking about. When I was in French Polynesia we were mobbed by sharks all the time, mostly black tips, white tips, grey and lemon sharks. You can dive some of the wrecks off of North Carolina and see sand Tigers up close. I don't think I would want to be hand feeding Great Whites, Makos or Tigers without a cage though.

North Carolina sounds cool but I live in Pakistan and thats the other end of the world for me. Africa, Middle East or Far East sounds more "economical" from where I am. These sharks that you named Tobago, are they aggressive?

I would also recommend the Galapagos and Cocos Island to dive with the sharks, and I hear that Yap and Paulu are great.

South Africa calls the sandtigers, raggies. You can find a few operators to take you to see them. Dive the Big 5 will. I would recommend this dive for everyone. Sand tigers are a must see. And we dive with Olympus in NC every year, they are great. Our club trip this year is with over 20 of us going...And no they are not aggressive, just respect their space.
cheers,

Check out "The Shark Watcher's Handbook" by Mark Carwardine and Ken Watterson (ISBN 0-691-09637-6). It lists places in the world with the kinds of sharks you're likely to see there, the likelihood you are to see them, when to see them, the dive centers with contact info, and whether or not there's cages and/or feeding involved. It also gives a list of a bunch of kinds of sharks and where you're likely to see them (with the same kinds of information in the other section).
I'm not involved with the organization, just a happy consumer.

Also check out Jim Abernethy's Scuba Advetures (www.scuba-adventures.com) in Riviera Beach, Florida. They do shark/dolphin live-aboard trips to the Bahamas which are outstanding. They also do dedicated shark live-aboard trips -- Carribean reef, tigers, great hammerheads, lemons, bulls, etc. I did a shark/dolphin trip last summer that was outstanding! Check out the photos on my website (www.debersole.com) under the Gallery and click on Wetpixel -- Bahamas

I'll second Diversauras. For sharks in their natural environment (no feeding necessary), Cocos is incredible. You'll see hammerheads, white tips, silkies, black tips, silver tips. I've never tried the shark feeding dives but wouldn't mind checking that out one of these days.

South Africa calls the sandtigers, raggies.
You can also dive with them around Sydney (there's a cavern full of them at a site called "Magic Point"; approx. 15m - I've been there 3 times)—they call them grey nurse sharks in Australia. There’s also Thailand, where you can see lots of gray reefs and the occasional bull shark around Chumporn Pinnacle near Ko Tao. I’m off to Layang Layang (Swallow Reef, Spratly Islands) soon to (hopefully) dive with the hammerheads.

Am back from Layang Layang - on the last day, we found a school of Sphyrna lewini (scalloped hammerheads) at around 38-45m; at least fifty sharks. It was just incredible. We also saw a lone hammerhead on a previous dive, as well as too many whitetip reef sharks and the occasional greyreefs.

I just came back from Bora Bora yesterday, and did 13 dives in 5 days. 5 of these dives were feeding Blacktips, Lemons, Grey Reefs, and Whitetips. We also did Manta Ray dives and spent 20 minutes with one circling around us feeding. We stayed at and dove with the Top Dive Resort. We went on the Padi Trip. http://www.topdive.com/topdive/index.php

We hope to have a shark dive to offer here in Orange Beach, AL. before to long. We dive with Bulls all the time in the summer and fall of the year. We also see Nurse, Black Tip and even Whale Sharks on occasions.

Fiji is has a great shark dive called the Supermarket. Mostly blacktip and grey reef sharks. I went there 5 years ago, and have been dreaming of going back ever since. Not only is the diving great, but the people are great, and, at least at the time, the exchange rate for Americans was about 2 to 1. My best shark diving, so far.

The best place to dive with sharks out of a cage is Jim Abernethy's Scuba Adventures. They dive with tiger sharks, reef sharks, bull sharks and many more outside of cages. THey specialize in Shark Trips going over to the bahamas from Palm Beach Fl. It is the best shark diving in the WORLD.!

SeaHound,
There are so many great places to interact with sharks, some natural encounters, some are shark feeds...All are magical. It just depends on what you want to experience. Do you want to feed the sharks? If you do then one of the Bahama islands is the place to go. They have an excellent shark feeder learning trip. Or do you want to see them get fed? If so Fiji, again the Bahamas, or Tahiti is the place to go for a diverse species encounter with out of the cage sharks. For natural encounters with toothy predators, sandtiger sharks are the animal you need to dive with. North Carolina is a great place to visit in the US, Australia has a few of these sharks and so does Africa.
