Just Curious...

Has anyone purchased gear off of eBay? Are you completely satisfied with your purchase? Please list the item(s), and the cost.

Please include a link to the auction or a picture of the item(s) purchased if possible.

Did you purchase because of nostalgia i.e. DA Aquamaster, Dacor Diving Lung, et cetera?

Did you purchase because you saved quite a bit of money?

Do you purchase because your a collector?

I paid $207 for the items below. I hate intergraded weight systems so the Scubapro Custom Black BC is a perfect backup for me. All equipment purchased was in almost mint condition (very few scratches) and checked out by my local dive shop to be safe. Gear will be used as back up for me and my son. This is my first AIR 2 so I will use it on my next dive.

My best two scuba purchases on ebay were 1) my BC- Mares Vector Chrome. Brand new and I really like everything about it. Have not found another I like as well. Cost 130.00. 2) My 3mil wetsuit. It also was brand new Don't remember the cost but the suit is great. Has relief zipper in the neck, wrist and ankles which makes it comfortable and easy to put on.

I bought 2 complete sets - BCDs - Regulators/Octos for $350 - all less than a year old and in "like-new" condition. Sold one set within a week for $250. Net cost for the system I'm using $100. :crafty:

My best deal has been the Oceanic gauge console below, new in the box for $90.00. Also bought my wet suit, light, and other small items. I picked up a used BC for my neighbors son for $10.00, and an Oceanic Omega regulator setup for $85.00, also for neighbors kid. I LOVE eBay!

I've bought two drysuits, sold one of them and another. I've also bought Jetfins, a mask, a stage bottle, two 100% O2 compatable regs as well as a digital camera and housing. When I switched to a backplate/wing I sold four BCs that were hanging in my garage. Four buyers were happy. The Dacor Rig went for $100 and the other three went for less than $40 each.

I bought a really cool cannister light that caugt fire while charging (the charger fuse had been bypassed). Glad I was sitting next to it!

I also bought an Ikelight housing that was supposed to fit Nikon, but actually fit nothing I could find (tried almost every camera in a large used camera store).

Great stuff. Not.

My best purchase began with selling a 1950 40ft Chris Craft on e-bay. I used the money to purchase a complete set of gear for the wife, updated some of my old 1980's gear for newer stuff. I blew the rest on dive trips. E-bay is the only way.

Know what you are buying, and ask questions. If the seller can't give you a straight answer, walk away(surf away?). Before clicking anything, figure out what you would give for this item in worse condition than what it is described in. And walk away if the bidding climbs too high. Too many people get caught up in a bidding war, and end up buying a used item for a new price.

That said, I have scored 4 sets of Conshelf regulators off of ebay. 3 in fine condition, the fourth is on the way, so I can't judge. I bought the last 3 simply to get the metal second stages, but the first stages were great, too. I paid less than $100 for all of them.

I also got a Dacor 200 reg with a bcd I bought($20 in the next town over, figured it wasn't a huge risk). I traded the reg for a pair of metal USD second stages.

I got a tank for $20($5 + $15 s/h). It just passed hydro and vip this week. But I do NOT recommend buying tanks off of ebay. I'll bid on a steel 72 if a)the price is right and b) it has been stored with pressure. But the price has to be pretty sweet for me to risk it. Plus, sellers like to jack up the shipping for tanks. Keep in mind that FedEx can ship a steel 72 for $15. Don't let them buffalo you into something much higher.

I picked up two older style jacket bcd's($20,see above, and $5). Both were in fine shape.

Finally, I got some 5mm booties recently($10.52 + $6 shipping). Look brand new and fit like a glove.

Bottom line, know the gear you are looking for and be willing to walk away from ANY "deal" if it has any hint of something weird or shady.

My best two purchases were two SP X-Tek BCD's, one with the Trav-tek wing and the other with the Rec-Tek and Sport-Tek wings. I've been very satisfied with both items. Bought them on E-Bay because SP no longer makes them (and the newer model, the S-Tek, was just discontinued as well).

I bought two Henderson wetsuits - one like new (4 dives) and one never wet (7/5mm Hyperstretch suit and a 5mm goldcore suit), both for less than $150 total :). Also picked up a pair of AL80s off of ebay from a local seller for less than the price of one new and a bunch of odds and ends like Jet fins, a folding snorkel and a spare mask. If you know how to shop and can be patient, there are good buys to be had. If you are not careful... well, your experience won't be nearly as pleasant.

Best buys - Tusa expert Xoom fins, brand new for $89, considering they normally run for about $240 (ish) here, that was a bargain (we really get nailed for just about everything here - don't even start complaining about gas)

Best sell - I had just bought 2 iPod minis for my trip to vanuatu with the wife, on the return I discovered that freaking apple had quietly released the 6gb versions with 18hr bat life. I put the 2 iPods up - one had a minor scratch the other was pristine. Result? sold the pristine one for $260 (au) and the scratched one for $278!!! the new model 4gb version with the 18hr battery life was $300 in the shop - brand new!!!

Gotta agree with the bidding thing - I always have a price in mind (research helps), and only bid in the last minute. If the bidding is beyond what I want to pay, I don't bid, and bidding in the final minute means that if my bid is beaten, I wont have time to do something stupid and raise my bid beyond the price I wanted to pay...

I use e-bay frequently for a variety of purchases. Fortunately, my experiences have mostly very positive!

ScubaPro Jet Fins with one missing strap for less than $15. I was planning to replace the straps with spring straps anyway. Paid full price for the spring-straps, which was over twice the cost of the fins.

I bought my first wetsuit for $99 delivered. It was a 2 piece 7mil Seaquest. I dove that suit for a year until I realized Lake Superior is much to cold in March for a wetsuit. I then purchased a USIA drysuit with bag, undergarments, and inflator hose for $300. The drysuit looked like it had never seen water as it still had stickers on the bottom of the soles of the boots.

I've bought a lot of my gear on ebay. A year ago. All of it in excellent condition.. Most of it never used...
1 Scubapro Classic BC $125
1 Scubapro Mk18 with an R380 $240
1 Scubapro Mk20 with G250 $200
1 Scubapro Air 2 $90
1 Uwatec digital pressure gauge $100
1 Uwatec Digital bottom timer. $75

I just took the regs, BC and another BC with an additional air2 to the Scubapro shop to have serviced and MAN was I surprised! $350 to service the gear!!!

If you go to buy gear on Ebay...... Make sure it's either NOT SCubapro or it's such a great deal that you just can't pass it up....

The money you save now WILL absolutely be gotten back from you when you have the gear serviced...

Actually, my experience buying SP stuff has been different; I got a basically new mk15 for $90, and an almost mint BA 2nd stage for $56 and had the set up serviced for about $50. I have bid on a few air2s, but they have been selling for almost LP price on new ones. I bought this stuff mostly because I want to check out the older SP stuff which so many, let's say "senior" divers rave about.

My best e-bay purchace was a Bare D-7 Supra 7 mil neoprene drysuit. I bought it for $300. It fit perfectly, the seals were in excellent condition. it came with the bag to keep it in and the original owners manual. I bought the suit with the intentions of extending my dive season in the Great Lakes and only planned on keeping it until I could save up enough for a DUI Clx 50-50.
I dived the suit for one and a half years, bought my DUI and sold the Bare Supra on e-bay for $300. getting back my original investement :). The person I sold it to was planning on diving it until he could save up enough for a DUI. It also fit him pefectly :).

I did my research, asked a lot questions, and believe I was lucky with my purchase. I've heard about a lot of divers having worse luck with drysuit purchases on e-bay.

I believe in supporting my LDS. My DUI drysuit was purchased through them.

Wow, sounds like your dive shop hosed you!!! Go to another one if possible! I have a few in my area, and if one cheated me like that I would never refer anyone or buy anything from them again. All the dive shops I go to I've been going to for over 20 years.

Next time try to get a price on labor per stage and parts before handing them your gear. Demand that ALL parts that have been replaced (down to the last O ring) be save so you can see the work done.

Warranties only cover about $8-$20 worth of parts...you should still pay the same for labor...if you don't...change shops!

I have been a fairly frequent buyer and seller on eBay with 65 transactions to date, about half sales and half bid/purchases. Recently I have sold off the wetsuit and split fins that were sold to me when I took the OW class three years ago. Both the fins and the 3 mm full suit were in really good condition after just 30 dives, but I wanted a smaller size wetsuit and I wanted to go to full foot fins. I happily got decent prices on very servicable equipment. This paid for a large share of the cost of the new wetsuit and fins, rather than having them sit in a closet collecting dust.

However, I am not buying any scuba gear on eBay that I depend on for staying alive/unbent/uninjured, such as a BC, regulator, console or dive computer.

You need to be knowledgable about what you are bidding on, what a fair price will be, and you should only bid on items listed by sellers that have numerous sales with only positive feedback.

Stuff I bought on ebay.

1. Zeagle Ranger, brand new, $350. No warranty, but I've had it for 2.5 years and it's been like my guardian angel.

2. Suunto Vyper, brand new $230. I had doubts about this as the seller was in Indonesia but it arrived within a week and I've had zero problems with it.

Conversely, stuff I bought that I wish I hadn't

1. Tilos 5mm coldwater gloves. $15. Gloves broke apart after two dives. Crap

2. Dacor wrist mounted compass. $30? Slow needle and wouldn't work even if it was slightly tilted. POS. I used it once for my AOW navigation dive and have never used it again.

I have managed to make a number of successful E-bay purchases. I will say that everything I had purchased was used.

A 98 and a 112 cu. ft. LP OMS tanks with DIN valves not a mark on them for $225 total

19 cu. ft. Pony bottle, bracket, and Dacor Tekna regulator for $125. All were in fantastic condition.

I have been extremely pleased with the purchases I have made.

Olympus PT-015 for my C5050 for $135. It was brand new in the box.
Low pressure inflator hose as a spare, Oceanic, brand new in the bag, $7
7 ft hose, new. Don't remember the price, but it was just about 1/2 of what LP was charging at that time.
3mm shorty for my son. He didn't like it, but my daughter has worn it for at least 2 years and just loves it. It cost $26, but has been worth much more in it's use.

So far only one purchase. I bought a Titanium Citizens Aqualand Duplex dive watch for $100. I bought it from a school teacher in Morehead City. He said he'd only worn it twice (don't know if it's true) but I haven't had any problems with it. I've used it for about fifteen dives and it works like a dream. They retail close to $500. It was one of those ebay items were I had to swipe it at the last second.

Thanks for the advice....
I guess it's my own fault. I already had some of the gear at a different shop that was taking WAY TOO LONG.. They had one of my DIN Regs and were supposed to service and convert to Yoke. But it was 6 weeks and all they kept telling me was that the parts were on backorder. That's where this Dive shop that charged me too much comes in...... My impatience and their willingness to take my $$.
To make matters even worse. The one BC (Scubapro SuperHawk) and Air2 were purchased "used" from that store's rental stock..... a year ago.

I have made other non-scuba related (Computer kvm) purchases on ebay. With out any problems....

I just got my latest reg from ebay. A Conshelf XI, in good condition. I bought it because the 2nd stages looked in good condition. You couldn't really make out the first stage in the pic. Well, it is almost flawless.
Popped it onto a tank, and the primary 2nd leaked, and the octo never opened up. Well, the exhaust valve on the octo was dry rotted, so it never got suction to open the valve. I took it off, and plugged the port(it's a backup reg anyway). And I flipped the lp seat on the primary, and it breathes like a dream now. Ebay is great!

I got my jet fins for $26. However, when I opened the package, they were two different sizes. I contacted the seller. He found the other buyer, put $20 into each of our paypal accounts and asked us to ship the wayward fin to the other. I am impressed with this seller. Tried the fins out last weekend and am a happy camper! Previous purchases of software were shaky at best.

Have gotten a buch of great deals on Ebay. Only twice have I had bad deals. It all centers on feedback. If they don't have a bunch of good transactions don't bid.

Got a Scubapro classic last week for $150 with only a couple of dives on it.

Set of Scubapro fins for $10.50 that are in great shape.

Bought 3 wetsuits, another BCD, regulators and a plethora of other scuba related items at very cheap prices that really made me happy.

Then there is the "scubapro regulator and gauges in like new condition" I purchased from a person with 1 feedback.... Regulator mouthpiece chewed by an animal and major section of it missing, SPG reads 300 PSI with no pressure applied. Gauges all yellowed and rubber dry rotted. Seller works for a law firm and thinks she is a lawyer. Never buy from a seller without a history of good feedback. Still debating nightly with this seller via email...

Bought 2 Kirby Morgan EXO-26 full face mask with three Ocean Technology System wireless comm units (one with surface tranducer) and an Amron hardwire surface comm unit for $500. Took a chance doing so as the seller had no prior sales and no feedback score. Bought a new in box, never wet Deepoutdoors 44# lift BC with stainless backpack and intergrated weights for $200. I have never been burnt on Ebay and have made over 200 purchases. Don't buy on impulse and watch similar sales for a while to see the average price of what you should be paying. Before I have bought something on impulse only to see the same item selling much cheaper a week or so later.

I have had lots of excellent buys but a few stand out. First - Seaquest XR2/Spectrum reg brand new in box for $55 including shipping. Also got a Titan LX Supreme 2nd stage for $45.

And the real stunner - A combo Scubapro BCD with Air2, dive bag and MK10+/D400 with Scubapro 3 gauge console for $150 and $20 shipping. I sold the BCD and the Air 2 to recoup my $170 investment, therefore getting a Mark 10+/D400 and an extremely nice Scubapro gauge console plus dive bag FOR FREE!!! I almost felt guilty. I purchased my inital gear purchase from a lady who quit diving and she turned out to be the same height, weight and very similar build that I am. For $250.00 (including shipping) I got a 7mm farmer jane wet suit, a 3mm shorty, Fins, snorkel, Oceanic (?) Diva BC, Sherwood Octo, mask, snorkel (unused) and few other misc accessories. I had every thing check out and it was all in perfect working order. I checked on prices and it would have cost me over $1500 for everything. They had only been dove on a couple of times.

I've bought stuff from Joe Diver America and a couple other dive shops that are online through ebay. I've had really great success with my purchases and I have been really happy with what I've bought. I'm very cautious about who I buy from and I always check out the seller before I even put in a bid. I always take what I buy the my LDS to have it serviced and checked over.

You try to sell the item under your user name, "DiverEMT" at eBay. You don't set up the reserve price and "Buy it Now" to tempt more bidding, but you use another fake ID, for example, "fraud." And then, you try to raise the final price by bidding on your own auction. It can be your friend's ID or other sellers at eBay to manipulate the final price.

You have to report this kind of transaction to eBay. They used to cancle the transaction after investigating seller's history. So, whenver you bid, you have to track down the seller's feedback and previous bidders that has been often shown each transaction.

I've never heard that term, you'll have to explain that one...

Atomic M1 reg $580 2 years ago totally amazing reg, worth every cent, It came with everything.
Scuba Pro R380 Octo $120 BNIB
The Bad
Suunto Cobra W/Compass $580, I got stung on the Cobra, the guy told me he'd only used it once but when I received it the computer logbook showed 20 dives, plus he was selling another one for his 'girlfriend' and that went for $530 Having said all that the computer works great and has never given me any problems. Changed the battery myself.

Henderson Gold core 5mm brand new, 'WITH WARRENTY' took it to the Red Sea, it suddenly developed a hole at the base of the zipper, half way through liveaboard week, when I got back seller wouldn't replace, told me to contact Henderson, they would not help ...

Apollo Bio-Fins for $45...used but functionally brand new and not scuffed up at all...

I'm far more willing to buy from eBay than from LeisurePro at this point. Especially since ScubaToys matches LP's pricing. I look to eBay only if the deal is really good and I get in contact with the seller.

Way, way too much to list all of it. Some classics:

My entire Oly camera rig and housing. Bout the strobe and handles from Yuzo - got the cam and stuff from eBay. Sold it 8 months later for more than I paid for it.

My BP/W rig. Both of our canister lights. Both our Vytecs. Both of our Atomic B1 reg rigs (in 2000... still perfect.) All of my PST cylinders. All of our fins, gloves, hoods, and masks. Our Stahlsac dive bags, our SK7 compass' and my DIR Hose kit. Last week I just bought my new drysuit on eBay (NEW stock medium CLX450, with the zip seal upgrade to neck and wrists, new-in-the box rock boots, uncut zip seals, bag, talc, wax, etc, etc... for $750 delivered) and my currently too large, very good condition FLX50/50 signature series will be listed there this weekend.

My best deal was a mis-listed Diving Unlimted International dry suit. It was a custom cut (that would never fit me) that I picked up with 400 thinsulate and booties for $475 - and sold 10 days later for $1260. I've picked up a few canister lights and flipped them, flipped a couple of backplates, and will be flipping some other stuff this weekend I picked up last week on the cheap.

Its the greatest thing to ever happen to the internet, EBay. Since 1999 I have thousands of transactions and have made and sold many tens-of-thousands of dollars. Nothing like it. Its changed the way I live. If you're not going to eBay before you step out the door to go buy anything, you're burning your cash.

As I've written elsewhere, I pieced together a regulator from various components I won on eBay, and except for the dismay of finding out that the Pro Diver first stage is no longer supported, I couldn't be happier. All these pieces are in practically mint condition. Prices are approximate.

US Divers Pro Diver (only second stage used): ~$60
US Divers SE2 first stage: ~$40
Aqua Lung recent model octo: ~$45
annual service: $15
shipping: uncertain

total eBay: ~$145 + shipping charges, annual

plus:
Genesis gauges & computer from my Dacor Viper setup: ~$400

...Then there is the "scubapro regulator and gauges in like new condition" I purchased from a person with 1 feedback....

Isn't it funny how those with legal training seem prone to moral ambiguity? (Well, my description wasn't TECHNICALLY untrue, just incomplete...and "I never had sex with that woman!") ;)

No doubt I'll get jumped on by a bunch of honest lawyers now. [/me checks watch....]

I bought my Zeagle Ranger BCD for $300 which only saw one dive - it was practically brand new! it's also the current model, not the older one, and it came with AIR2 (it also came with the origninal inflator too) and trim weight pouches. I took off the AIR2, put on the original inflator and sold it for $115, making my Zeagle Ranger purchase to be only about $285.

The best deal I think that I ever got was actually here on Scubaboard. I got a DUI cf300x drysuit for $500 and it fit me perfectly. It already had new neck and wrist seals.

Well I have bought so much off Ebay I can't remember the prices of everything BUT every purchase was a GREAT deal and worked perfectly and I have had absolutely NO complaints about any of the purchases. I realize dive shops try to brain wash people into thinking you will die instantly from purchasing Scuba gear off the internet. But the reality is they talk tons of new students into purchasing brand new gear, and 75% never dive again after certifying. SO there is a large amount of almost new gear to be had at fire sale prices. Heres my list.

Brand new Apeks Black Pearl Regulator I think 475.00

Suunto Cobra W/quick disconnect and hose 450.00

OS Systems XL dry suit with undergarments great condition 205.00

Citizens dive watch "Depth, temp, timer, Beautiful watch!!! 75.00

Henderson Hyperstrech 7mm for wife. I think 175.00 "was listed by a store and they allowed me to send it back twice to get the right size!!!

Henderson XXL 3mm wetsuit for me perfect condition 66.00

Brand New Mares Morphos Pro BCD. 250.00 "sold for 350.00 a few months later"

OS Systems small drysuit with under garments for wife. 125.00 seals needed repair which they listed up front. Did not fit great so kept Undergarments and bag and resold Drysuit for 175.00

and to many smaller items to mention. I love ebay. There is not a day out of the week I do not get online at 6:00am when I get to work and scan the entire days listing of Scuba equipment while things are slow. Best deal I EVER got was finding a full size Scuba Pro dive bag at a thrift store that they priced at 50.00 I bought it just for the bag and did not even look inside it till I got it out of the shop. It had 2 wet suits, a Scuba Pro MK20 with D400 second stage, a Scuba Pro Master Jacket BCD with Air 2 inflator installed, 2 sets of fins and 2 masks. Even after having the regs and air 2 serviced at my LDS I still cleared about 650.00 after dumping everything but the bag on ebay.

Ebay has been really good to me as well. It has allowed me to buy more gear faster and have money left over for the courses relating to the type of diving I want to pursue. With that being said, anything I buy on ebay that is directly responsible for life support never gets wet until I have a trusted tech at my LDS check it out and/or rebuild it. I've made some really killer deals, some not so good, and a couple so-so, but the latter are few and far between and are still a savings over buying new. I check out a seller thouroughly, especially feedback, length of time on ebay, recent tranactions, type of equipment sold and ratio of sells to buys. You don't want to buy something from someone with 100% feedback for 299 buys and one sell especially if they haven't dove that piece of equipment. I stay away from the estate sales and selling for a friend auctions...you know the ones: we don't know much about this equipment and we aren't divers, but you'll get a great deal. I buy from divers who talk the talk and who trust the equipment, but are just upgrading.

I bought a 'dive compass' for sale a price that seemed to good to be true and it was: it was a cheap thing about as big as an eraser intended to be strapped on a wrist watch.

On the other hand, it's a great prop at ethics classes--

All my gear is from ebay except my wetsuit mask and fins, I paid 20 dollars for my primary reg a US divers conshelf xiv- which I love. I used all scubapro and and dacor stuff prior to buying the conshelf and I prefer the old conshelf it breaths great, the metal body helps with drymouth and I have money left over to eat with. I paid 35 for my BC which was in like new condition, really you would have thought it came off the shelf at the LDS. Old regs can be bargains you can get bullet proof regs for pennies on ebay as long as you are ok with not having the trendiest new gear.
Of course you gotta get it all serviced no matter what the seller says. But I am all about used gear especially regs. well serviced they should outlast the owner.

E bay is an excellent option for discount stuff. I got my sunto cobra on ebay, brand new from a licensed distributor. Ebay is all relative, check the sellers feedback, they might actually be a dive store in some other state. See if they have a home page and check em out. Pay via paypal and they have a guarantee insurance thing, check it out.
