I've been certified almost two years...... I've shore dove La Jolla shores... and the cove... Laguna Shaws, Crescent cove....
I Love Laguna.... La Jolla is okay.... I'm looking for some fresh places to go.... and would love to avoid the trial and error of finding some new above average places to dive because of time restraints...
I know there are a lot of you who have been diving around here for years Sooooooo
Can anyone recomend some of their favorite places to shore dive that has a nice beach, for family members?
Thanks in advance.........

Some suggestions (starting from the north end of LA):

Leo Carillo, near the Ventura Cty. line. Great beaches, camping, diving. My favorite dive spot.

Malibu. My favorite dive spot. Scott and others can give you some better ideas on spots with beaches, but my favorite is at the north end of Malibu Rd., where it meets back up with PCH. Malibu diving is my favorite, but not as many family-friendly and "beachy" dive spots.

Malaga Cove in Palos Verdes. My favorite dive spot. Great beach for the family, usually not crowded, good parking, great diving. Though it's a trek down the cliff to get there, and there are no facilities.

Catalina. My favorite dive spot. Can't beat a day trip on the Catalina Express, dive at the Casino, and the family has tons of stuff to do. Snorkeling at Lover's Cove is the bomb.

Redondo. Haven't dove there, but it's popular and, of course, it has a beach.

St. Lawrence Seaway has some great wrecks accessible from shore. There are some good picnic facilities at several. (You didn't say the sites had to be local)

If you've exhausted all the beaches in Laguna (have you? see here), Crystal Cove State Park a little to the north is a nice beach and has some good dives.

I also like a little cove in Newport called Little Corona. Pretty good dive, and good snorkeling when water is fairly clear.

Palos Verdes is very scenic, but in many spots it's a bit of a hike down from the bluff in dive gear. Old Marineland/Long Point is a great dive, sort of a so-so beach.

Vet's Park at Redondo is a great night dive, but usually not too thrilling during the day.

And lots of great spots in Malibu -- Leo Carrillo is among my favorites too.

Thanks Ted for the info and pointing out that I didnt mention local sites.... I'm looking for local sites... I'm an hour drive from Laguna.... I live in Canyon Lake, north of Murrieta. I'm going to Catalina next week, but am always looking to sneak away to a cool place to dive that doesnt require as much time as a trip to Catalina....

If you are up for dives between Palos Verdes and Redondo PM me and I'll point you to a group that dives that area frequently, best to go with people famiar with the sites.

Have you seen Sheckler's book? Get a copy of "So cal Beach Dives"

ChrisA is talking about www.divevets.com, no need for a PM
I am on that site too, you'll get good info there too

However, pasley, jmaccabe, hbdivegirl, and myself are just as or more familiar with the sites from PV to redondo.

Malaga cove is the only place in that area I would recommend. Beaches are much nicer in Malibu though.

I love Pearl Street in Laguna. I saw a giant black sea bass there. I have also dove Cleo, there is a barge wreck or something or other out there but didn't find it. I haven't dove off shore of Treasure Island yet, but have heard that is a great dive too.

Just in Laguna there is Seal Rock, Deadman's (both off Cresent), Shaws, Fisherman's Cove, Diver's Cove, Heisler Park, Sleepy Hollow, Cleo St., Cress St., Woods Cove, Moss St., I'm sure there is more but this is what comes to mind..

Come to think of it, I'm looking for a fresh dive spot in Laguna too. Seems like we always go to Crescent or Shaw's, with an occasional Diver's thrown in. Why don't we get a group together who will try a different site every weekend? Make our way along the coast, trying all those sites Ann Marie mentioned. Anyone?
