Hi, all -

My husband and I are booked to do 2 dives on the Pinthis in a few weeks - we are pretty excited to be branching out a bit - last year it was all Poling. Anyways - someone posted some links here for me shortly before I did my first Poling dive...one included almost a maplike sketch of the dive site... Does anyone know if there is something like this for the Pinthis? Also - do you guys have any tips? What would be the best things to see on our first dives on this wreck? I've heard the anchor line is nice but a v long swim...how long is long?

Thanks, and happy Friday - Allison

Here are a few clips I shot while diving on the Pinthis a couple years ago. These clips may not play well in Windows media player, but if you paste the addresses into Quicktime, they should work well.

This clip shows a view of the wreck as I descended the anchor line toward it. The visibility was quite good, and you can see the upside down hull pretty well. These shots should give a good appreciation of why fishermen have so much luck around shipwrecks... the fish flock to them.

These show a closer view of the wreck, with some of the superstructure exposed. http://home.comcast.net/~msilvia7/100503_Pinthis.AVI

It's hard to make out, but when I was beginning to head back toward the boat, I noticed the Pinthis' rudder lying in the sand about 50 feet from the wreck. It looks like it fell cleanly off... probably when the ship rolled over. http://home.comcast.net/~msilvia7/100503_Rudder.AVI

Clips aside, I saw some cool marine life on the wreck, including a colorful 14 armed sunstar. There are numerous openings in the hull where rivets have burned or corroded, and the steel plates have fallen away.

The clips played great in Windows - thanks! Damn, that's a lot of fish... How excited am I???

Very excited! It's my favorite New England wreck so far, which is saying a lot considering that it's turtled.

We wrote up a dive report when a few of us dove it last year.

Matt:

I've got to do the Pinthis this Summer! All the vids, pics and dive reports look fantastic. Are you planning a charter out there in July or August? If so, I'd love to jump on it. My three wrecks for this year are the Pinthis, Poling(I haven't done it yet!) and one of the intermediate RI wrecks. I'm out until late June with a boo-boo on my knee, but keep me advised if you decide to organize a charter or jump on some open slots somewhere. Thanks.

I think Fran has a couple of spots open on one of his Pinthis trips. I'll check it out and let you know.

I wouldn't worry too much about navigation on the wreck...it's as simple as it gets...intact wreck lying upside down, leaning to one side...It's about 200 ft long. Due to it being fairly shallow (sandis only at 100ft), you can easily see the entire wreck in one dive. Combine that with the great visibility in the area, and you'll have no problems.

What boat are you using?
