Hey SBoarders, I am a rare poster, frequent lurker, and one of the instructors donating time and skills that June 25-26th specialty dive weekend. Please forgive any lack of polish on the discussion of the fundraising events for Travis - we are far from pros at this kind of thing and anyone's help is more than appreciated.
At the link KingStroke (??) posted, there is more info, and specifically the flier for you to click on, but here's the nutshell version: our pal, the occasionally irascible Dive N Surf rental/repair dude, Historical Diving Society hardhat enthusiast, and all-around 30-year dive community mainstay Jocko Robinson, has a 19-year-old son Travis who was paralyzed in a split second last year in a swimming pool accident. Travis used to play varsity ball and scuba dive with his Dad, and now he's fighting hard to regain the use of his limbs. Travis' care, as you can figure, is already astronomical, and now he's a candidate for surgery we all hope will help him regain some function. We're kicking off what will be a bunch of nondenominational (i.e., no particular dive shop, club or clique -it's just the right thing) events to raise money, and as you can guess from our marketing efforts above, we're forced to keep overhead LOW to maximize the contributions which can go straight to Travis. This is all just getting started.
Thus, please, please, please: (1) spread the word about these events and the need for financial help, (2) buy our blue bracelets which are at most local dive shops and Redondo Beach Hennesseys (yes, Hennesseys'; we know who we're dealing with in the local dive community), (3) take any of these specialty classes the week of June 21-26, where we're all donating time and asking you to pay $100-200 (depending on the specialty) plus your c-card and book costs (get them anywhere, borrow them, whatever; we don't care who you shake down) (4) just show up at our specialty dive and cook out at Malaga in June 25 or Vets on June 26 and hang around, maybe buy a t-shirt or kick in a little cash, and (5) participate by going to the website
www.helptravis.org where there is lots more information (also still developing). You want to plan an event, you say? We'll help! Whatever we can do, together...heck, I'm in.
Sorry for the long post and any confusion, but thanks for your ear and maybe ... your help.
